The sight was familiar: Arsenal stumbling on the road in the Champions League, albeit for the first time this season. And the Gunners were flailing in especially shocking fashion, having conceded in the 12th and 15th minutes to fall into a 2-0 hole against Ludogorets, a team they annihilated 6-0 at the Emirates. For Arsene Wenger’s men to have folded right then and there would not have been a surprise.

Because we are accustomed to seeing collapses by Arsenal, not Arsenal comebacks. But fight back is what the Gunners did. And it was pretty stunning.

Goals by Granit Xhaka and Olivier Giroud brought them level at halftime. Then, when it looked like Arsenal would have to settle for a draw, Mesut Ozil produced a wonder goal in the 88th minute for Gunners supporters everywhere to cherish forever and ever. His memorable match-winner completed the 3-2 come-from-behind victory.

And here’s the photo for Arsenal fans to have blown up to poster size.

In making goalkeeper Milan Borjan and two Ludogorets look foolish, Ozil secured the three points to clinch a berth in the round of 16. Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain (a 2-1 winner over Basel) both advance out of Group A with two games remaining.

“I was delighted that we managed to level before halftime,” Wenger told reporters afterward. “Now we play Paris at home and we have a chance to finish top.”

Fittingly, Ozil was the focus of the postgame buzz. He tweeted a picture of himself celebrating with, oddly enough, a famous line by New York baseball legend Yogi Berra. (We highly doubt he knew he was using a well-known Yogi-ism.)
