Lakers waive forward Shawne Williams

After starting 11 games for the Los Angeles Lakers this season, forward Shawne Williams has been waived, a league source told Yahoo Sports.

The Lakers would've had to guarantee Williams' contract for the rest of the season unless they released him on Tuesday.

Williams' release will open more opportunities in the frontcourt for rookie Ryan Kelly.

Williams, 27, signed as a free agent with the Lakers this summer. He averaged 5.2 points and 20.2 minutes a game for the Lakers.

After playing for the Nets in 2012, Williams was out of the league for a season before rejoining coach Mike D'Antoni with the Lakers. Williams had some success under D'Antoni with the New York Knicks in the 2010-11 season.
