John Axford did great on his Oscar picks, Sean Doolittle not so much

It’s the day after the Academy Awards, and besides the insane Best Picture mix-up, what everyone’s talking about today is this one topic: how did you do in your Oscar pool? Did your picks pan out? Did you choose “La La Land” to win it all, or did you pick “Moonlight” and get a huge surprise?

Oscar picks are something John Axford knows a little bit about. The pitcher, now with the Oakland Athletics, has started an annual tradition of releasing his Oscar picks for every single category. And this year was no different.

So now that the ceremony is over, how did he do? He did really well!

With that record, Axford would win most Oscar pools. But his final record wasn’t actually 20-of-24. Due to an envelope mix-up, Axford’s pick for Best Picture, “La La Land,” was announced as the winner, but the winner was actually “Moonlight.” So his final record was 19-of-24. But Axford wasn’t upset. In fact, he was elated! He loved “Moonlight,” and actually tweeted about it once before the Best Picture was announced.

And he tweeted about why “Moonlight” was is secret pick for Best Picture a little later.

So Axford did really well, but how did his teammate Sean Doolittle do? Not so good. Axford and Doolittle have been tweeting back-and-forth about the Oscars, and about Doolittle’s picks. If you can call them picks.

Axford immediately noticed the flaw in Doolittle’s plan: “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” wasn’t up for every award. It was only up for two, for Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects.

But Doolittle wasn’t going to change anything. He was sticking to his “Star Wars” plan.

So SHOCKINGLY (not really), Doolittle didn’t get a single pick right. And Axford tweeted his condolences.

Doolittle was fine with it, though, because “Rogue One” won the most important Oscar of all: the Oscar of his heart.

Here’s a lesson for next year’s Oscars: if you want to win your pool, go with Axford’s picks, and not Doolittle’s.
