Jets Get a Steal with Jamal Adams at Number 6

Bears

Last time the New York Jets had the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft they were blown away that Leonard Williams was there for the taking. Jamal Adams would be, who was the number one prospect on John Gruden’s board and the number two prospect on Mel Kiper’s board, was not believed to be available when the Jets picked at six. With a crazy trade between the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears this allowed Adams to fall and the Jets could not have been any happier.

There were reports stating the Jets told Adams, when he was on his pre draft visit, he was wasting his time because he would not be there when they picked. Most fans probably agreed with that as well. Most Jets fans were talking up O.J Howard, Malik Hooker, and even Deshaun Watson for the Jets to select at pick six. But with the first round in the books this is the perfect pick for he New York Jets.

Adams is an all around and physical player who can come up in the box to be a blitzer, play the run, or even cover tight ends or slot receivers. He is a great tackler in open space, you will see him missing many one on one tackles like most of the Jets current safeties do, (cough, cough, Calvin Pryor). Not only can Adams play up in the box but he is also comfortable playing the high safety in coverage. He has range to cover sideline to sideline while making the play on the ball and is very reliable as the last lone of defense.

Depending on how the rest of the draft goes will indicate where the Jets plan on using Adams. If the Jets pick another safety, particularly a free safety, then it shows the Jets might be moving on from Pryor. There are still a lot of good players on the board in round two so this could get interesting. Don’t be shocked if the Jets make the pick for Dalvin Cook at pick 39 or make a play at one for the corners still on the board. The Jets are in great position to start off the second round and Jets fans should be excited. Jets fans should grinning after that first round; getting a great player to build around in the back end of the defense.
