Iona recruit shot, killed in Chicago

Iona basketball recruit Michael Gaynes was shot and killed in front of his home in Chicago late Thursday night. Gaynes was 22.

Iona coach Tim Cluess said the 6-foot-7 Haynes, part of a nine-man recruiting class, "wanted a better life for himself. He was just looking for a chance to change his life," Cluess told the New York Daily News.

Gaynes was shot three times -- in the chest, lower back and wrist -- trying to break up a fight over a stolen necklace, his cousin, Kandice Blouin, told the Daily News.

Haynes played at Washington High School and averaged 17 points and 22 rebounds as a junior. He played last season at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa.
