The Great Wall of Washington
The Washington Redskins coaching staff includes Bill Callahan, the Assistant Head Coach and offensive line coach. Fans need to know that Bill Callahan is known throughout the NFL as the best, or at least one of the very best offensive line coaches in the league. He has almost 20 years experience and has been a head coach at both the college and professional levels. As Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders in 2002, he led the Raiders to win the AFC Championship and a trip to the Super Bowl. We all know that when he was with the Dallas Cowboys, he built the “Great Wall of Dallas,” an offensive line regarded as the best. He has had offensive linemen in 25 Pro Bowls.
Since Bill Callahan joined the Washington Redskins, the offensive line has ranked in the top 5 regarding pass protection, meaning our quarterbacks get sacked less than most NFL quarterbacks. They pass protect very well. Bill Callahan is working hard to build the “Great Wall of Washington” and be the best offensive line the NFL. He is not that far away from his goal. He is working on better run blocking.
Some fans have noticed in the 2017 NFL draft that our Redskins drafted only one offensive lineman. Chase Roullier from Wyoming is 6’4″ tall and now weighs 312 lbs. Bill Callahan will take this young rookie under his wing and make an NFL center out of him. I expect him to gain more muscle weight also and he will go from 312 lbs. to about 325 lbs. Ronald Patrick is another work in progress being coached up by Bill Callahan. Patrick had experience at both center and guard at the University of South Carolina. My point is Bill Callahan is bringing the backup players up to his high standards. The offensive line did not need as much improvement as the defense, so 6 of the 10 picks were spent on helping the defense. I believe the Redskins scouts are checking out the undrafted offensive line players for a “diamond in the rough.”
Redskins fans need to watch for Kevin Bowen to become a starter. This is his 2nd year under coach Bill Callahan and he is 6’9″ tall and 335 lbs. Bowen is a tackle now, but I feel Bill Callahan will make a guard out of the 23-year-old. I expect to see more playing time for the 6’8″ 335 lbs. Ty Nsekhe, and for the 6’5″ 335 lbs. Arie Kouandjio in 2017. Last of the backups would be Vinston Painter at 6’4″ tall and 322 lbs. He is a natural run blocking guard from Virginia Tech.
Keep the faith Redskins fans. It all starts with the big guys up front and we have potential and talent for coach Bill Callahan to work with. Finally, I predict with Bill Callahan as Assistant Head Coach, more run plays will be in the game plan which is needed for a well-balanced attack. HAIL! HTTR!
