The New York Giants may have found Eli Manning’s successor by selecting California quarterback Davis Webb in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Webb was a graduate transfer from Texas Tech last season. He threw for 4,295 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in his only season leading the Golden Bears. Webb had a quarterback rating of 135.6. He was an honorable mention All-Pac 12 performer.

Webb drew comparisons to last year’s No. 1 overall pick: Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff. He’s got a big body (6’5”, 229 pounds) and a big arm. He’s a better athlete than one would expect for someone his size. Most important of all, Webb is going to put in the work to become an NFL quarterback.

Webb played in a spread offense at California, meaning he’s going to have to learn the NFL game. He has an opportunity to learn behind a two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback with all-time stats.

“I’ll try to be a great teammate first and get better week to week because I have a long way to go,” Webb said.

Manning has started in 211 regular season and postseason games, the third longest streak for a quarterback in NFL history. Only Brett Favre (321) and Peyton Manning (227) have more consecutive starts at the quarterback position.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese made it clear there is no quarterback controversy.

“Eli is our quarterback and we still think he can play at a high level,” Reese said. “But we do know he’s not going to play forever, so we are trying to make the best decision as we move forward for the rest of Eli’s career.”

The Giants were surprised Webb was still available at the 87th pick. He is said to have the strongest arm in this year’s draft.

“Obviously, we’d like for him to have a couple of years to be the caddy and learn the pro game,” Reese said. “He has all the tools to play quarterback.”

The Giants drafted three quarterbacks since acquiring Manning in a 2004 draft day trade: Rhett Bomar (a fifth-round pick in 2009), Andre Woodson (a sixth-round pick in 2009), and Ryan Nassib (a fourth-round pick in 2013). Nassib didn’t re-sign with the Giants after his contract expired and hasn’t signed with another team.

Head coach Ben McAdoo said he never met with Webb during the pre-draft process and only spoke to him for the first time on Friday.
