Film Room: Seahawks rookie Jarran Reed
Jarran Reed may turn out to be one of the best steals of the 2016 NFL Draft. The former Alabama defensive tackle fell to the Seahawks in the second round and is projected to start at Brandon Mebane’s old spot.
Last night in a preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, we got to see a lot of Jarran Reed in action, and in the process learned a lot about him.
Reed made some nice plays stuffing the run and finished the game with three tackles (one for a loss) and a quarterback hit. Let’s take a trip to the film room and watch Seattle’s rookie at work against Minnesota and Kansas City’s offensive lines.
In his first live NFL game Reed had some strong moments, particularly when battling Chiefs center Mitch Morse. On this play Reed stacks him up:

Here’s a couple of plays that show Reed’s skillset well. On the first, he’s able to beat Vikings center John Sullivan and drive him three yards into the backfield, then he disengages and makes a play on Jerick McKinnon. Then, he beats Joe Berger at the snap and drops Matt Asiata for a loss:

It hasn’t all been wine and roses for the rookie, though. On a couple of occasions he got pancaked by Nick Easton. Here you’ll see Easton swallow Reed up and open a big hole for running back C.J. Ham:

Later on in the game Easton got the better of Jarran Reed again. Here you’ll see Reed simply get overpowered and driven to the ground by Easton, who is pretty much the exact same size. (6’3″ and 300 pounds compared to 6’3″ and 307 pounds for Reed.)

Putting in some more time in the weight room won’t hurt but overall Reed looks like a promising nose tackle who can one day be a great run stuffer.
