Could Joe Mixon be in play for the Colts?

The Indianapolis Colts have the ageless wonder Frank Gore returning in 2017. Gore will be 34 when the season starts, and by far the oldest starting running back in the league.

Sure he became the first running back since John Riggins in over 20 years to rush for over 1,000 yards at 33. But the fact of the matter is that father time will catch up. One sign of that way the fact that the Colts were dead last in runs of over 20+ plus yards last season.

Gore needs help, and you can expect Chris Ballard and Chuck Pagano to target a running back at time point in the draft. Enter Joe Mixon.

The Colts currently hold the 15th overall pick in the first round. And it is likely that Leonard Fournette and Dalvin Cook will be gone by the time they are on the clock. Again, enter Joe Mixon.

But there is one big problem here. Mixon has MAJOR off the field issues. By now you have likely watched the video of Mixon assaulting a female. And if you haven’t you can look that up on your own time. It is as bad as it sounds.

If it were not for that video we could be talking about Mixon with Cook and Fournette. So why in the world would the Colts even look at him if he would be a PR nightmare?

New general manager Chris Ballard has been known to take risks on players with questionable pasts. Remember, Ballard helped draft Tyreke Hill and Marcus Peters in Kansas City. Both of whom has big off the field problems that hurt their draft status. Both have been Pro Bowl players since entering the league.

Mixon at 6’1″ and 226 pounds is the ideal size for a running back, and is one of the most explosive running in open space in this draft class. His 6.75 yards created in space would rank first over the last three years of any running back entering the draft.

The question will come down to whether or not Ballard and the Colts are willing to give him a second chance.
