Nevada boys get dramatic 4x800 victory at qualifying track meet

The Nevada boys track team automatically qualified for state in the 4x800-meter relay after the team of Nick Frideres, Paul Stephens, Brian Rohde and Carter Holland edged Gilbert for first on a great anchor from Holland.

Holland had to hold off Gilbert anchor Jonathan Stoker for nearly the entire 800 meters. He dug down and found the will to keep just ahead of Stoker through the finish line, winning the race by a mere 0.48 seconds.

“I just saw an opportunity to make a move and I thought I should do it as quick as possible and see what I could pull off,” Holland said. “I just went out as hard as I could and tried to hold it. I saw he was coming up on my right, so I tried to run on my toes as much as I could. I just barely got him.”

The Cubs finished in 8:12.10 — the fifth-best qualifying time in 3A. Gilbert ran an 8:13.18.

Holland also made it in the 800 after running a runner-up time of 2:01.22 to just edge out the third-place effort of 2:01.28 by North Polk's Zach Sporaa. North Polk's Austin Stierman won in 2:00.83.
