Nevada Journal sports round-up: Cubs win HOIC titles in boys track and girls golf
Nevada claimed Heart of Iowa Conference championships in boys track and girls golf last week.
The Nevada boys track team scored 157 points at Saydel High School in Des Moines May 4 to comfortably win the HOIC title over Roland-Story (125). The Cub girls golf team was also impressive at the conference meet, shooting a 349 over 18 holes at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center May 3 to beat defending champion Roland-Story by 20 strokes for first.
The Nevada girls track team took sixth at the HOIC meet with 77 points. Roland-Story won the girls title with 150 points.
The Cub boys golf team came in second at the HOIC boys meet, also held at the Lincoln Valley course May 2. Nevada shot a 358 over 18 holes to trail only Prairie City-Monroe's score of 341.
The Nevada track teams also competed at the Comet Co-ed Invitational May 1 in Alleman. The Cub boys took first with 148 points and the girls came in sixth with 59.
The Nevada boys golf team also placed sixth at the Webster City Invitational May 4 at the Briggs Woods course with an 18-hole score of 357 and sixth at the Gilbert Invitational with an 18-hole score of 329 Saturday at the Ames Golf and Country Club.
The Class 2A No. 5 Nevada boys soccer team took second at the Nevada Invitational Saturday at Cub Stadium in Nevada. The Cubs fell to No. 2 Gilbert by a 2-1 score in the title game after defeating Kuemper Catholic (7-0) and 1A No. 2 Regina Catholic (1-0) in their first two games of the tournament.
Nevada concluded its home tournament with an overall record of 11-4. The Cubs also crushed Boone at home May 1, 10-0.
The Class 1A No. 2 Nevada girls soccer team pulled off a 6-0 shutout over Boone May 1 at Boone. The victory put the Cubs at 10-3 on the season.
The Nevada boys tennis team took second at the North Central Conference tournament at Clear Lake May 3. The Cubs scored 16 points to finish behind only Clear Lake's score of 29.
The Nevada boys also fell to South Tama at home May 4 by a 5-2 score.
The Cub girls tennis team took fourth at the North Central Conference tournament in Fort Dodge with 9 points. They suffered an 11-0 loss at home to Ballard May 1 and won at South Tama May 4, 6-3.
The Colo-NESCO track teams competed at the Iowa Star Conference co-ed meet May 4 at Tama. The Royal boys placed fifth with 65 points and the girls came in 11th with a score of 32.
The Royals also competed at the Meskwaki Dream Builders Invitational May 1 in Tama. Both teams placed fifth, with the boys scoring 79 points and the girls 72.
Here is what we learned from this week's Nevada and Colo-NESCO high school athletic competition.
Nevada boys win four events at HOIC track meet
The Nevada boys track team won five events, placed second four times and picked up three bronze medals in winning the HOIC meet.
Connor Kunze won the 100-meter dash in 11.41 seconds and Carter Holland took first in the 800 in 2:03.90. Brian Rohde and Dawson Lemke went first and second in the 3,200 with respective times of 10:47.09 and 11:01.76 and Jacob Khounsourath and Austin Waldera went 1-2 in the high jump with respective jumps of 6-feet, 2 inches and 5-8.
Jackson Baker and Kane Williams were first and third in the boys long jump. Baker jumped 23-3.25 and Williams 19-9.5.
Rohde and Paul Stephens were second and third in the 1,600 with respective times of 4:54.44 and 5:00.13.
In relays the Nevada boys placed second in the 4x100 and 4x800 and third in the 4x400. The Cub 4x100 team of Jackson Baker, Kunze, Williams and Peter Ludwig finished in 45.37, the 4x800 team of Nick Frideres, Stephens, Will Bauman and Holland clocked in at 8:55.98 and the 4x400 quartet of Waldera, Clay Franzen, Frideres and Holland finished in 3:40.15.
The Cub girls won the 4x800 and placed third in the distance medley at the HOIC meet. Ava Vanderheyden also gave Nevada a runner-up finish in the girls 800, Stefany Riera Ramones took third in the 100 and Ariana Chappell placed third in the discus.
Sophia Martinez, Brooke Axmear, Alexa Betting and Vanderheyden ran a 10:29.67 in the 4x800 to beat Prairie City-Monroe by over 18 seconds for first. Vanderheyden's 800 time of 2:31.65 only trailed the 2:29.30 effort by Greene County's Kaycee Pittman.
The Cub distance medley team of Kira Sigler, Bryn Crain, Martinez and Axmear finished in 4:48.17. Riera Ramones clocked in at 13.54 in the 100 and Chappell's top throw in the discus was 96-3.5.
At the Comet Invitational the Nevada boys won six events and the Cub girls picked up one victory.
Kunze won the 100 in 11.17, Holland the 800 in 2:12.36, Frideres the 1,600 in 5:01.24 and Baker the long jump in 20-2.5 for the Nevada boys. Rohde was second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:02.18 and Connor Barfels was runner-up and Isaac Williams third in the 110 high hurdles respective times of 16.98 and 17.61.
Holland placed third in the open 400 after running a 55.34 and Williams won bronze in the 400 hurdles after finishing in 1:03.78.
In relays the Cub boys 4x100 team of Baker, Kunze, Williams and Carson Clem won in 46.37 and the 4x800 team of Frideres, Stephens, Rohde and Holland placed first with a 9:00.33 showing. The boys 4x200 team of Baker, Kunze, Williams and Ludwig placed second in 1:39.35 and Barfels, Williams, Jaden Grimm and Mason Herrold won a silver medal in 1:10.07.
Jackson Burlage, Clem, Stephens and Dawson Lemke added another silver medal for the Nevada boys in the distance medley with a time of 4:13.17.
Axmear and Martinez went first and second in the 1,500 and Chappell was runner-up in the discus for the Nevada girls.
Axmear ran a winning time of 5:50.69 in the 1,500. Martinez was close behind in 5:51.49.
Chappell's peak throw of 93-10 came in just behind the winning distance of 95-8 by South Hamilton's Daytona Ferrie.
The Cub girls 4x100, 4x800 and distance medley teams all placed third at Alleman. Kylie Taylor, Stephanie Lopez, Riera Ramones and Crain ran the 4x100 in 54.22, Martinez, Axmear, Lopez and Vanderheyden finished the 4x800 in 11:14.12 and Sigler, Kyla Jackson, Vanderheyden and Martinez clocked in at 5:14.17 in the distance medley.
Olivia Axmear leads Nevada to a conference championship in girls golf
The Nevada girls golf team was dominant at the HOIC meet in State Center.
All four Nevada golfers who turned in a counted score placed in the top 10 individually. Olivia Axmear led the way by shooting a strong round of 80 over 18 holes to win medalist by three strokes over Roland-Story freshman Brinley Carlson.
Cub freshman Lauren Schmidt tied West Marshall's Allie Pfantz for fourth individually with an 86. The only golfers to top Schmidt were Axmear, Carlson and Carlson's older sister Makenna (85).
Reagan Schmidt tied West Marshall's Ella Meyer for sixth with an 89. Mary Hensley shared eighth place with South Hamilton's Rebekah Carlson after they each carded a 94.
Mya Spykerman tied for 19th with a 105 as the other Cub golfer competing at the meet.
Kyle Kingsbury, Karter Beving place in top 10 for Cub boys at HOIC meet
Two members of the Nevada boys golf team placed in the top 10 at the HOIC meet in State Center.
Kyle Kingsbury took fourth with an 18-hole score of 82. Kingsbury lost a card-back for second after finishing in a three-way tie with PCM's Grant Van Veen and Greene County's Jack Hansen for the second-best score behind PCM's Nick Farver, who shot an 80 to win medalist.
Beving came in 10th for Nevada after scoring a 90. Gabe Kramer and Easton Gray finished just outside the top 10 for Nevada, taking 12th and 13th with respective rounds of 92 and 94 to complete the Cub scoring.
Kole Beving also placed in the top 20 for Nevada with a 16th-place score of 95. Jameson Lawler took 24th with a 99.
At the Webster City Invite Kingsbury tied for 10th with an 81 over 18 holes. Beving placed 15th with an 84, Kole Beving tied for 28th with a 91, Gray tied for 44th with a 101, Lawler took 49th with a 102 and Kramer tied for 51st with a 108.
North Polk's Jacob was medalist with a 72.
At the Gilbert Invite Kingsbury shot an 80, Lawler and 82, Gray an 83, Kramer an 84, Karter Beving an 85, Alec Higgins a 94, Kole Beving a 95 and Kobe Thiposouk a 100 over 18 holes. Knoxville's Evan Smith was medalist with 71.
Cub boys soccer team looks impressive at Nevada Invitational
The Nevada boys soccer team showed it is worthy of its lofty No. 5 ranking in 2A with its impressive showing at the Nevada Invitational.
The Cubs jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the half and coasted to victory against Kuemper Catholic. Drew Robinson exploded for 4 goals, Kaiden Weber, Aidan Freeman and Kent Sponseller netted 1 goal apiece, Edgar Cabrera dished out two assists and Sam Betting, Connor King, Owen Freeman and Carson Rhodes each dished out an assist.
Robinson scored Nevada's only goal in the big win over Regina Catholic. He scored it in the first half off an assist from Cabrera.
Nevada was outstanding defensively against the Regals. Keeper Noah Mills only needed to make one save.
The Cubs jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the half against Gilbert, only to see the Tigers put up 2 unanswered goals in the second half to earn the victory.
Weber scored Nevada's goal against Gilbert off a ball from Cabrera. Mills ended up with one save at keeper.
Zach Holtan and Nash Hanson each had 1 goal for Gilbert.
Nevada soccer teams roll past Boone
Both Nevada soccer teams were dominant in their victories over Boone.
Six different players scored for the Nevada girls in their victory over the Toreadors. Kaleigh Groat had 1 goal and assist apiece and Lynze Geerdes, Betting, Aubrey Thompson, Avery Anderson and Graci Schiller each scored once.
Belle Nelson and Reagan Davis each dished out one assist.
Cabrera, Owen Freeman and Robinson led the Nevada boys against Boone.
Cabrera had a hat-trick with 3 goals and he added an assist. Freeman netted 2 goals and Robinson finished with 1 goal and three assists.
Betting tallied 1 goal and assist apiece, Gavin Egeland, Sponseller and King 1 goal apiece, Nick Larson two assists and Dylan Fritz one assist.
Rowan Steele gives Nevada boys tennis one win at the NCC tournament
Rowan Steele accounted for Nevada's lone victory at the North Central Conference tennis tournament.
Steele went 1- from the No. 1 singles position. He defeated Clear Lake's Branden Kuhlmeier in one set, 8-5, and lost to the Lions' Cabot Neuberger in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-4.
Rhett Harter was 0-1 in singles play for Nevada with an 8-0 loss to Neuberger.
In doubles play the Cub tandem of Ian Thomas and Mason Harrold fell to Clear Lake's Ben Loge and Justin Kerr, 8-0.
The Cub boys earned two singles victories during their loss to South Tama. Samuel Loux won the No. 4 match over South Tama's Wyatt Wacha in a 10-7 battle and Sam Coussens coasted to a 10-1 win over the Trojans' Ian Vore in the No. 5 match.
Cub girls dominate singles play against South Tama
The Nevada girls tennis team used outstanding singles play to get past South Tama for its second victory of the season.
August Martinez won the No. 1 match over South Tama's Alondra Bolanos-Lupian by a 10-6 score and Paige Handsaker delivered a 10-5 victory over Kara Nachazel in the No. 2 match. Meagan McGaffin took the No. 3 match over Hannah Houghton, Brooklyn Estes beat Brooke Hitchcock in the No. 4 match and Allie Dittmer won the No. 6 match over Cassandra Klostermann — with all three victories coming by an identical 10-8 score.
Nevada also picked up one win in doubles play. The Cub team of Handsaker and McGaffin won the No. 1 match over Bolanos-Lupian and Nachazel in an 11-10 thriller that saw Nevada win the tiebreaker by a 7-4 score.
Colo-NESCO boys win two events, girls take second once at the ISC meet
The Colo-NESCO boys track team picked up two gold and silver medals apiece at the ISC co-ed meet.
Breckin Clatt took first in the 400 hurdles. He ran a 58.14 to top the 59.78 time by Dunkerton's T.J. Beard for first.
Nathan McFarland won the boys high jump for the Royals. McFarland jumped 6-2 to beat Baxter's Travis Treyton's effort of 5-10 for the conference championship in the event.
The Colo-NESCO boys placed second in two relays.
The Royal shuttle hurdle team of Clatt, Mark Bower, McFarland and Jack Angell ran a 1:09.19 to only trail Janesville's 1:08.75. Colo-NESCO's 4x400 quartet of Gannon Short, Angell, Lucas Frohwein and Clatt finished in 3:43.35 to place second to BCLUW's 3:36.22 effort.
The Royal girls track team took second in the sprint medley relay and Sophia Clawson won an individual bronze medal in the high jump, open 400 and 400 hurdles.
Emma Lennie, Molly Angell and Hannah Matteson teamed with Clawson to run a 1:59.34 in the sprint medley. Don Bosco won in 1:55.54.
Clawson's best jump in the high jump was 4-8. Collins-Maxwell's Chloe Wierson won and Riceville's Shayla Greeley took second after they both jumped 4-10.
Clawson ran a 1:04.41 in the open 400. Only Don Bosco's Kendra Nissen (59.98) and BCLUW's Miranda Jones (1:04.12) were faster.
In the 400 hurdles Clawson clocked in at 1:13.02. Nissen won in 1:09.12 and Clarksville's Cailyn Hardy was second in 1:10.94.
At the Dream Builders Invite the Colo-NESCO boys placed second twice and third once.
Bower finished the 110 high hurdles in 18.87 to take second to Baxter's Logan Rainsbarger, who finished in 16.44. Laine Golly ran a 13:47.50 in the 3,200 to come in behind the 11:00.28 time by Baxter's Matt Richardson and Angell took third in the open 400 with a time of 57.39.
The Royal girls got wins from Clawson in both the open 400 and 400 hurdle races. She completed her trip around the track in the open 400 in 1:05.22 and ran the 400 hurdles in 1:15.81.
The Colo-NESCO girls took second in the sprint medley with a 2:07.72 showing and the Royals were runners-up in the shuttle hurdle with a time of 1:22.39.
