Nevada Journal sports round-up: Cub softball crushes Hawks, Royal baseball team wins three

The Nevada softball team earned its third victory of the season behind an incredible performance from Jorie Hillman June 19.

The Cubs crushed South Hamilton by a 19-7 score. They also lost to Newton at home by a 6-1 score June 20, at Class 3A No. 7 Saydel by a 12-0 margin June 21 in Des Moines and at Grand View Christian, 6-0, June 22 in Des Moines in going to 3-20 overall and 2-10 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Statistics for the Saydel, Newton and GVC games were not available at press deadline.

The Nevada baseball team went to 8-12 overall and 2-8 in the HOIC after splitting four games during the week.

The Cubs suffered a 21-10 loss to South Hamilton June 19 at the Nevada Cubs Baseball Field in Nevada and then earned a 13-9 win at South Tama June 20. Nevada was dealt a 16-1 loss at Saydel June 21 and the Cubs picked up a 7-0 victory over East Buchanan Friday at the Nevada Cubs Baseball Field.

The Colo-NESCO baseball team turned in a 3-1 week to push its record to 9-12 overall and 7-7 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

The Royals opened the week with a 13-5 victory at Clarksville June 19 and followed that with a 6-5 win over Janesville June 21 in Zearing. Colo-NESCO suffered a 5-2 non-conference loss to Grand View Christian June 22 in Des Moines then ended the week with a 5-4 conference win over GMG at Green Mountain.

The Colo-NESCO softball team went 1-3 during the week to put its record at 7-7 in the ISC South and 7-14 overall.

The Royals suffered a 12-0 loss at 1A No. 7 Clarksville June 19 and a 2-0 loss at BGM June 20. They came back with an 8-2 home victory over Janesville in McCallsburg June 21 then wrapped up the week with a 3-2 loss at GMG Friday.

Here is what we learned from this week's Nevada and Colo-NESCO high school sports competition.

Nevada softball team's bats explode in victory over South Hamilton

The Nevada softball team saw its bats catch fire against South Hamilton.

The Cubs pounded out 18 hits versus the Hawks. They scored five runs in the second, six in the third, one in the fourth and seven in the fifth to end the game early on account of the mercy rule.

Hillman was the star of the show. She smacked three home runs and finished with 10 RBIs, the most for a single game in Iowa this season. But several other Nevada players were also productive at the plate.

Jadyn Melohn was 3-for-3 with two doubles, four runs and an RBI and Paige Handsaker 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Olivia Axmear went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs, Joslynn Farmer finished 2-for-4 with two runs, Meagan McGaffin doubled and drove in two runs, Kylie Taylor doubled, stole two bases and scored a run and Maycie Mailey doubled once and scored twice.

Avery Hinson added a single and Mataya Vorm scored two runs.

Axmear was the winning pitcher. She gave up six unearned runs on 12 hits and four walks in three innings.

Mya Spykerman allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout in two innings of work.

Colo-NESCO baseball team rallies past Janesville, edges GMG

The Colo-NESCO baseball team picked up some momentum last week after its close wins over Janesville and GMG and its decisive triumph over Clarksville.

The Royals opened the week with their dominant win at Clarksville. Lucas Frohwein was 2-for-2 with a triple, two walks, four steals and three runs and RBIs apiece, Drew Banks went 2-for-3 with two runs and Isaac Harrington 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Breckin Clatt was 1-for-2 with two runs, a steam and an RBI and Spencer Hansen doubled and scored a run. Trenton Beard scored twice, stole a base and drove in a run and Clay Gilmore finished with one run and RBI apiece.

Hansen gave up two earned runs on four hits and he struck out 12 in six innings as the winning pitcher.

Colo-NESCO rallied from a 5-1 deficit to get past Janesville. The Royals had seven hits and Banks got the win in relief after throwing one scoreless inning with two walks and a strikeout.

Hansen went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs and RBIs apiece, Banks finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Kaleb Gray was 2-for-4 with two walks for Colo-NESCO on offense against the Wildcats. Beard doubled, walked, scored and drove in a run, Frohwein walked twice and finished with one run and RBI apiece and Gilmore and Landon Gjerde each scored one run.

The Royals saw their momentum briefly halted with the loss to Grand View Christian June 22 in Des Moines.

Colo-NESCO only had four hits in the loss. Harrington and Banks both singled and scored, Jamen Cochran was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Gilmore drove in a run and Clatt picked up a single.

Frohwein was the losing pitcher. He surrendered four earned runs on four hits and walks apiece with six strikeouts going all six innings.

The Royals rebounded with their victory over GMG to end the week.

Banks was the winning pitcher versus the Wolverines. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.

Frohwein was 2-for-3 with a home run, walk, run and two RBIs and Beard 1-for-4 with two RBIs for Colo-NESCO in the victory. Gray doubled, walked and scored, Hansen and Banks both doubled and scored, Gilmore walked and scored and Harrington and Clatt both singled and walked.

Karter Beving pitches Nevada baseball team past East Buchanan

The Nevada baseball team went through another up-and-down week.

The Cubs opened the week with their loss to South Hamilton. Nevada was in the game all the way until the seventh inning, when everything fell apart.

The two teams were tied 7-7 after two innings, 9-9 after four and 10-10 going into the seventh. Then South Hamilton exploded for 11 runs and Nevada had no answers in the bottom of the inning.

Drake Hinson was 3-for-4 with two doubles, runs and RBIs apiece, Kole Beving 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Jackson Burlage 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for Nevada in the loss. Colyn Groat went 1-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece, Easton Gray singled and scored and Calvin Franzen, Karter Beving and Griffin Tamburo each scored two runs.

Hinson took the loss after allowing four earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Nevada rebounded with its win over South Tama. The Cubs scored four runs in each of the last three innings, outscoring the Trojans 8-2 over the last two frames to earn the comeback victory.

Hinson, Burlage and Karter Beving each drove in three runs against South Hamilton. Hinson went 2-for-3 with a triple, walk and run, Burlage 3-for-4 with a triple and four runs and Beving 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs.

Gray went 2-for-4 with a run, Anthony Eaton 1-for-3 with three runs, Colton Leslie 1-for-3 with a walk and Groat scored a run. Nevada also had six steals as a team during the win.

Dawson Lemke was the victorious pitcher. Lemke threw one scoreless inning, giving up two hits and picking up one strikeout.

The Cubs did not have much success against Saydel. They allowed six runs in the second, seven in the third and three in the fourth before the game ended due to the 15-run mercy rule that goes into place after four innings.

Nevada had five hits in the loss. Eaton singled and scored, Kole Beving singled and drove in Eaton and Karter Beving, Hinson and Gray each singled once.

Groat took the loss against the Eagles. He surrendered nine earned runs on seven hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings.

A dominant pitching performance from Karter Beving against East Buchanan allowed Nevada to end the week on a high note.

Beving threw a one-hit shutout versus the Buccaneers. He struck out 13 batters and only walked two.

Beving was also 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs at the plate. Hinson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Burlage was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI, Eaton finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, Groat doubled and scored, Gray singled and scored and Tamburo came up with a hit.

Callie Kohlwes and Katie Spalding power Royals past Wildcats

A strong pitching performance from Callie Kohlwes and a big home run from Katie Spalding lifted the Colo-NESCO softball team to its victory over Janesville June 21 at Stan Vigness Field in McCallsburg.

The Royals scored four runs in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead and they coasted to victory. Kohlwes gave up two unearned runs on five hits and three walks and she retired 10 batters on strikes.

Spalding had the big hit of the game with a three-run homer in the second inning. Annabelle Nessa was 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Katherine Rouse singled and scored, Cassidi Bartmess scored twice, Molly Angell picked up one run and RBI apiece and Kohlwes and Abigail Hostetler both singled once.

Jasmine Johannes walked twice and scored a run and Riley Handsaker also scored once for the Royals.

Colo-NESCO opened the week with a 12-0 loss the Clarksville. The Royals could not recover from an 11-run Indian first inning.

Colo-NESCO was held hitless by Clarksville pitcher Cailyn Hardy. Kohlwes was the losing pitcher after surrendering eight earned runs on seven hits and one walk with one strikeout in 1/3 of an inning.

A strong pitching performance from Nessa was not enough to get Colo-NESCO past GMG June 20 in Brooklyn.

BGM scored both of its runs in the sixth inning. Only one of those runs was earned as Nessa tossed a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Colo-NESCO only had two hits versus BGM. Kohlwes and Handsaker both singled once.

The Royals ended the week with a tough 3-2 loss at GMG Friday.

Nessa again threw well in defeat versus the Wolverines. She allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out 13 batters with just one walk.

Angell went 3-for-3 with a run, Kohlwes doubled and drove in a run, Rouse picked up an RBI, Bartmess scored once and Nessa and Spalding each singled once.
