Nets’ Ben Simmons listed as one of the most overpaid players in 2022-23
Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons has had an interesting time ever since he came to Brooklyn as part of the James Harden trade in the 2021-22 season. Simmons has still dealt with injuries that have limited his time on the court and when he has been on the court, the results have been underwhelming to say the least.
In a recent article by HoopsHype, Frank Urbina gave his ranking of the top-20 most overpaid players in the NBA in the 2022-23 season and Simmons ranked fourth on the list. Urbina mentions that HoopsHype calculates the value of a player’s performance in a given season by using their Real Value metric that allow these types of evaluations to be written.
Simmons, 27, averaged 6.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 56.6% from the field and 43.9% from the free-throw line. Per Urbina, Simmons’ play last season was valued at a little over $6.5 million, but he was paid a little over $35 million.

“Former No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons has had a rough go of it lately, missing all of 2021-22 due to a holdout and back problems only to return for 42 games in 2022-23 before getting shut down again due to more back issues. In Simmons’ half-season’s worth of play, he didn’t particularly light it up, either, averaging just 6.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists on 56.6 percent shooting while attempting two three-pointers all year and looking like a shell of his former self. Simmons has two more seasons left on his contract, which will pay him $37.9 million in 2023-24 and $40.3 million in 2024-25. Hopefully, he gets healthy this summer because if he doesn’t, we fear he might make this list again next year.”
