Nets 95, 76ers 92

NEW YORK - Joe Johnson scored 10 of his team-high 22 points in the third quarter and Keith Bogans scored 13 in a rare start, as the Brooklyn Nets snapped a three-game losing streak with a 95-92 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers Sunday afternoon at the Barclays Center.

The win was just the third in 11 December games for the Nets (14-12), who posted an 11-4 record in November. It was also only the Nets' second win in their last seven home games. It also snapped a six-game home losing streak against the Sixers (13-15). The Nets last defeated the Sixers at home on April 5, 2009.

The Nets took the lead for good with an 18-0 run over a three-minute span of the first quarter and held the advantage the rest of the way, although the Sixers sliced the lead to one on several occasions.

The Nets had six players reach double figures, led by Deron Williams, who had 16 points and five assists while shooting 5-of-11 from the floor. Brooklyn also received a solid 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists from Gerald Wallace and 14 points from Brook Lopez.

Jrue Holiday had a game-high 24 points and nine assists and Thaddeus Young had 18 for the Sixers, who attempted only 10 free throws for the entire game. Evan Turner added 15 points in vain.

With the Nets clinging to a 72-71 lead, the Nets went on a 9-4 run to take an 81-75 lead with 5:44 left. Bogans scored five points during that span to aid in the winning cause.

The Sixers then cut the lead to 86-82 with 1:52 left, but then Williams, still mired in a shooting slump, nailed a clutch 3-pointer with 1:04 left that pushed the lead back to 89-82. Williams hit two free throws with 7.6 seconds left to seal the win.

Thaddeus Young caught fire in the third quarter for the Sixers, scoring 12 points, including a scoop shot that brought Philadelphia to within two at 66-64.

But Johnson answered with a 30-foot jumper at the buzzer, his second trey from well behind the 3-point arc in the final minute of the quarter. Johnson's bomb gave the Nets a 69-64 lead at the end of three periods.

The Nets started off slowly, misfiring on 11 of their first 13 shots and falling behind 12-4. But the Nets then went on an 18-0 run over a 3:06 span to take a 20-12 lead. Lopez had six and Bogans five during the run.

Brooklyn led, 24-17, at the end of the first period, connecting on 7-of-8 from the floor over the final five minutes.

Jerry Stackhouse hit a driving shot in the lane that pushed the lead to 26-17 in the opening stages of the second quarter, but the Sixers made a comeback, thanks to the shooting prowess of Turner, who hit two consecutive long jumpers to bring the Sixers to within 28-25. Turner had 10 points to lead Philadelphia at the half.

Thaddeus Young hit two free throws, the first attempts from the foul line for the Sixers, with 1:24 remaining in the first half to slice the Nets' lead to 43-41, where it remained at intermission.

NOTES: Sixers coach Doug Collins vows to be true to his word, even if it will cost him around $75,000 to do so. In the closing seconds of Friday night's 99-80 win over Atlanta, Collins instructed Turner to dribble out the clock and not to score again, even though the Sixers have a promotion that all fans would receive a free hamburger if the Sixers reached the 100-point plateau, drawing boos from the 18,000-plus at the Wells Fargo Center. After the game, Collins said that he would buy the fans in attendance a hamburger out of his own pocket...The Nets sent forward Tornike "Toko" Shengelia and guard Tyshawn Taylor down to the D-League affiliate in Springfield, Mass., on Friday, and the pair of rookies made the most of the brief stay with the Armor. Taylor scored 32 points and Shengelia had a triple-double (22 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds)... "They played a lot of minutes and obviously had a lot of highlights," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "I thought they were efficient." Both players were back with the Nets Sunday and Shengelia was rewarded with early minutes against the Sixers...Shengelia got the call over veterans Reggie Evans and Kris Humphries Sunday...Humphries did not play at all for the first time this season...The Nets started Bogans at small forward and Wallace at power forward Sunday... Stackhouse returned to action after missing five games with a knee problem...Andrew Bynum remains out of action for the Sixers with bone bruises on both knees. There is no timetable for his return...This is the first of a rigorous eight-game road trip for the Sixers.
