Nebraska got 92K for volleyball. How many could Purdue get at Indianapolis Motor Speedway?

Indianapolis Motor Speedway regularly draws hundreds of thousands of people for the Indianapolis 500, and has hosted Formula 1, NASCAR, MotoGP, air racing, the Rolling Stones and so much more.

So how about volleyball?

Nebraska set a world record for women's sports attendance last week when more than 92,000 people filled Memorial Stadium in Lincoln for a Cornhuskers volleyball match against Omaha.

That got Purdue volleyball coach Dave Shondell thinking ...

"The only place I think we could go to meet that would be the Indianapolis Motor Speedway," he said.

IMS certainly has enough room. As racing fans know, Churchill Downs, the Vatican, Yankee Stadium and several other landmarks could fit inside the Speedway grounds − at the same time.

Shondell said he got plenty of questions about Purdue possibly hosting a huge volleyball event. He noted it's unlikely at Ross-Ade Stadium, though the Boilermakers' football home has expanded this year.

"People were asking me, 'Are we going to play a match here?' … It would be fun," he said. "Maybe play the Butler Bulldogs at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway."

Kyle Shondell, Dave's son and the Butler coach, pondered about such a match a while back.

Maybe IMS owner Roger Penske and the athletic directors at Purdue (Mike Bobinski) and Butler (Barry Collier) are listening, coach.
