NCMP boys lose twice in road double dual

Dec. 22—GRINNELL — The Newton-Colfax-Mingo-Pella boys swim team took a short drive east on Monday night and met Marshalltown and Grinnell/BGM for a double dual at Grinnell College.

The Cardinals brought nine of their 10 swimmers and lost twice in the pool.

Marshalltown went 2-0 on the night with a 139-28 win over NCMP and a 110-65 victory over host Grinnell/BGM. Grinnell downed NCMP 105-35.

The top performer for NCMP was Clay Lamb. He was second overall in the 100-yard butterfly. His time of 1 minute, 1.67 seconds was good enough for first against Grinnell and second against Marshalltown.

Lamb also was third overall in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:09.93. He was first against Grinnell and third in the battle against Marshalltown.

Eli Eekhoff was third overall in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle.

His time of 24.23 seconds in the 50 put him second against both Marshalltown and Grinnell. The time of 54.27 in the 100 freestyle placed him second against Grinnell and third against Marshalltown.

Drew Fuller and Mack Copeland were third and fourth overall, respectively, in the 500 freestyle.

Fuller was first against Grinnell and third against Marshalltown with a time of 6:21.08. Copeland was second versus Grinnell and fourth against Marshalltown with a time of 6:28.37.

Fuller also placed fifth in the 100 backstroke. He was third against both teams with a time of 1:16.76.

Jonah Brown finished fourth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:35.73. He was second against Grinnell and third against Marshalltown.

Marshalltown chose not to compete in the final two varsity races.

In the 100 breaststroke, Brown was third overall but first against Marshalltown with a time of 1:24.59. Will Mills was fourth overall and second against Marshalltown in 1:32.31.

The Cardinals' best finish in the relays came in the 400 freestyle relay. Marshalltown pulled out of the event, which helped NCMP down the Bobcats with a time of 4:02.85. The foursome of Eekhoff, Copeland, Lamb and Fuller finished third against Grinnell.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Eekhoff, Copeland, Lamb and Brown finished fourth overall with a time of 1:47.72. The foursome placed second against Grinnell and third against Marshalltown.

The 200 medley relay netted a fifth place overall finish with Tyler Sterling, Mills, Brown and Kenny Skinner-Havens. That foursome was third against both opponents with a time of 2:19.03.

The Cardinals did not have the services of Brady Comer, who was gone at a band function.
