NCHSAA football recaps: Seventy-First confirms identity, South View continues to dominate

In a Week 8 schedule aimed squarely at a homestretch of conference matchups leading to state playoffs, Cumberland County teams had the opportunity to either change course or settle into their identity.

The Seventy-First Falcons are who we thought they were.

Continuing the two-seasons-running tradition of going undefeated in the regular season, Seventy-First improved to 7-0 with its second shutout, this one coming against Jack Britt, 37-0.

The Falcons haven't given up more than two touchdowns in a game this season, allowing one score or less in five of their seven victories.

Donovan Frederick had a pair of rushing touchdowns to highlight the Falcons' offense, one coming on a 45-yard run.

Jack Britt (3-4, 3-1) came into Friday's game at Seventy-First as the only other team with a perfect 3-0 record in United 8 Conference games. Entering Week 9, the Bucs are tied with South View and Cape Fear at 3-1 with the Falcons alone at 4-0.

Up next, Seventy-First plays at Purnell Swett and Jack Britt hosts Cape Fear.

South View 27, Purnell Swett 7

The Tigers just keep winning.

South View (6-1, 3-1 U8) rolled over another opponent Friday as Christian Rutledge added to his touchdown total, which ranked second in the state in Class 4A at 18 heading into Week 8.

Rutledge ran for a pair of TDs — one for 30 yards — and quarterback Tyriq Clarida passed to T.J Farrior for two more touchdowns as the Tigers kept pace with Cape Fear and Jack Britt in the battle among 4A teams trying to earn a conference bid into state playoffs with three games left in the regular season.

The Tigers host Gray's Creek (5-2, 2-2) next week.

Pine Forest 22, E.E. Smith 0

In the All American Conference, Pine Forest (4-3, 4-0) kept its place atop the league standings with its fourth straight win after a 0-3 start.

The Trojans appeared to take command of the AAC last week with a win over Terry Sanford, but Harnett Central defeated the Bulldogs in Week 8 to keep pace with Pine Forest in the league race.

The conference winner could be decided when the two sets of Trojans face off on Oct. 20 in Angier.

Between now and then, Pine Forest plays at Triton and Harnett Central plays at Overhills.
