NBA draft lottery 2024 time, odds and TV channel: How to watch Pistons find out draft pick

The Detroit Pistons will discover their fate in the 2024 NBA draft on Sunday afternoon.

The 2024 NBA draft lottery takes place Sunday afternoon to determine the order of the first 14 picks of the draft at the end of June. The Pistons have the best odds to secure the No. 1 overall pick at 14%, along with the Washington Wizards, after finishing the worst record in the NBA during the 2023-24 season, 14-68, setting the franchise record for losses in a season.

The Pistons can only fall four spots in the lottery, meaning the lowest they could pick is No. 5. The Pistons have a 52.1% chance of staying in the top four which puts the odds of falling to five at 47.9%. Detroit fell to five last year despite sporting the worst record, missing out on Victor Wembanyama and instead landing Ausar Thompson.

Detroit and Washington are the two teams with a 14% chance with the two worst records, but Charlotte and Portland aren't far behind. Both teams have odds of just over 13% of landing the top pick with the third and fourth-worst records. San Antonio, who won the lottery last year, is the only other team with double-digit odds at 10.5% and declines down to 0.7% for the 14th pick.

The Pistons will likely have a new President of Basketball Operations in place to make the draft pick in June, and they will have to make the right selection in a draft class considered weak by analysts to help lift Detroit out of the NBA's cellar.

How does the NBA draft lottery work?

The fourteen picks are determined through a lottery of the teams who did not make the playoffs this season. Teams with the worst records, such as Detroit, possess the best odds for the top pick, but the odds are flattened and do not exceed 14% for the top pick for any team. The five worst teams have double-digit odds for the top pick, led by Detroit and Washington at 14%.

The teams with the fifth to 14th-best lottery odds have slimmer chances to jump up, but could still make a move that could bump down one of the top four. Teams with the worst lottery odds can only jump into the top four, retain their own pick or slide a maximum of four spots.

The most a team can fall in the lottery compared to their original spot in the odds order is four spots. For example, Detroit will not have a pick worse than fifth, or Charlotte, who has the third-best odds, can't slip past 7.

Who are the 2024 NBA Draft Prospects?

There's not a clear top prospect with generational talent like Wembanyama last year, which could lessen the pain of a fall for the Pistons if it happens again. Ironically, two of the top prospects are again French in Zaccharie Risacher and Alex Sarr, both of whom could end up in Detroit.

Pistons beat writer Omari Sankofa II broke down five top prospects and how they fit in Detroit, including Risacher and Sarr. Here are those players that could become a Piston.

  • Alex Sarr, 19, 7-1 C, Perth Wildcats

  • Zaccharie Risacher, 19, 6-9 F, JL Bourg

  • Donovan Clingan, 7-2 C, UConn

  • Matas Buzelis, 6-11 F, G League Ignite

  • Dalton Knecht, 6-6 G/F, Tennessee
