National reaction to Texas football's 35-6 win over BYU: 'Maalik Murphy is QB1'

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian congratulates quarterback Maalik Murphy after the Oct. 28 win over BYU at Royal-Memorial Stadium. The transfer portal opens on Dec. 4, but Sarkisian insists that for now, his players have been focused on Friday's regular-season finale. He said he'll probably have transfer/NFL conversations with players next week.

Maalik Murphy's first college start went about as well as he could've hoped, as Texas dominated BYU in all three phases of the game for a 35-6 win.

Texas' starting quarterback wasn't perfect filling in for the injured Quinn Ewers, throwing an interception and having one fumble. However, the defense got two interceptions and a forced fumble of its own while Xavier Worthy finally broke off a big punt return for a touchdown early.

Murphy completed 16-of-25 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns, quieting the murmurs of a potential Arch Manning appearance. Both scores were thrown to wideout Adonai Mitchell, who had three catches for 59 yards.

The Cougars were unable to punch the ball into the end zone at all thanks to Texas' stinging defense. On the other end, though, the Longhorns struggled in the red zone once again, failing to convert on two fourth downs inside the 5-yard line.
