Mysterious purple light in California sky is no UFO. It’s Sacramento Kings’ victory beam

Sacramento residents recently began reporting sightings of a mysterious purple light in the skies above California’s capital city.

It’s not a space portal and it’s no UFO. It’s the new Kings victory beam.

There was another sighting Saturday night after De’Aaron Fox returned from a knee injury to score a season-high 37 points — including a game-winning halfcourt buzzer beater — to beat the Orlando Magic 126-123 in an overtime thriller.

On Sept. 16, or “916 Day” as it is known in Sacramento, the Kings announced they would light the beam outside Golden 1 Center every time the team wins a game, at home or on the road. A Kings personality will have the honor of igniting the beam when the team wins at home.

The beam is powered by four lasers. The idea was inspired by the Los Angeles Angels, who light the halo on the “Big A Sign” outside Angel Stadium after every win.

Area residents first spotted the purple light in the sky after the Kings picked up their first win of the season against the Miami Heat on Oct. 29. They saw it for the second time following a road win over the Charlotte Hornets on Oct. 31 and again after Saturday’s dramatic victory in Orlando.

The Kings will conclude a four-game road trip when they visit the Golden State Warriors on Monday. They will play the Cleveland Cavaliers at home on Wednesday and visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday before returning to Sacramento to open a four-game homestand against the Warriors on Nov. 13.
