Registration open for Delmont cyclo-cross race

The Delmont Visionary Committee will host its second annual "Hammer the Hills of Delmont" cyclo-cross race.

It will be at 9 a.m. Nov. 11 at Shields Farm. The race is a challenging course with wooded trails, grass, steep hills, rough surfaces and obstacles. Races will take place across a variety of age categories. Registration is $5 for children 10 and under, $20 for the "juniors" men's and women's division (ages 9-18) and $40 for adult divisions.

Register online at Bikereg.com/62339. Admission is free for spectators. The event is sanctioned by USA Cycling.

Proceeds will benefit the committee's work to make Delmont more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly.

Library to host 'Sleepy Hollow' live reading

The Murrysville Community Library will host a live reading of Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" at the Clark Schoolhouse on West Pike Street.

It will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 5 at the schoolhouse, 5332 West Pike Street in Murrysville. Local storyteller Alan Irvine will read the story.

The event is open to teens and adults. Registration is required by calling 724-327-1102.

CROP Hunger Walk set for October

The 44th annual Murrysville CROP Hunger Walk will take place Oct. 8, and this year will take place along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail.

Sign-in will begin at 1 p.m., and the walk will be at 1:30 p.m. Last year's walk raised nearly $11,400, the highest annual total to date.

A fourth of the money raised through walk donations stays in Murrysville, and will be divided between Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church's Loaves & Fishes food pantry, and two local food distribution centers for the Westmoreland County Food Bank.

The 3.5-mile walk will start and finish by the shelter at Duff Park, 4500 School Road South in Murrysville.

Community band seeks new members

The Delmont Concert Band is currently seeking new members.

The band rehearses Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, 301 East Pittsburgh Street in Delmont.

Tickets on sale for 'Pilgrimage Jr.'

The Delmont Pilgrimage is expanding to include a session specifically geared toward children.

"Pilgrimage Jr." will be Dec. 2 from 2-4 p.m., where pre-school and elementary-age children can experience the Nativity while interacting with the angel Gabriel, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, wise men and animals associated with the Christmas story.

There will also be childrens' activities at the Delmont Public Library and an opportunity to take photos with Mary, Joseph and their donkey at Trinity Church.

Tickets are $6 for children ages 3-12. Children age 2 and under are admitted free.

There are only 150 tickets available, and can be purchased at DelmontPilgrimage.com.

'Trick or Treat on the Trail'

Murrysville Recreation officials are seeking vendors to sign up for the department's annual "Trick or Treat on the Trail" event, set for Oct. 28 along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail.

Businesses and organizations can sign up to distribute candy to participants. The department's goal is 50 vendors.

Visionary Committee to hold bike raffle

The Delmont Visionary Committee is selling raffle tickets for two bicycles.

The first, a Kona Coco HD Electric Bike features a hub drive motor and has a retail value of $1,999. The second is a Journey Sora 700CC, with an aluminum frame, waxwing carbon fork and a retail value of $1,299.

Raffle tickets are for $10, which will purchase five chances on the Kona or eight chances on the Journey. Winners will be based on the Pennsylvania Lottery's Pick 3 evening lottery on Nov. 9 for the Kona and Nov. 10 for the Journey.

All proceeds will benefit the committee's efforts to make Delmont more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly.
