Murdock's Murphy, Gardner's Bettez place in top slots at MIAA indoor track championships

Gardner-area indoor track teams competed in the MIAA Championships over the past week. Murdock, Quabbin, Gardner, Oakmont and Narragansett all competed in the Division 5 meet on February 14 at Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Monty Tech participated in the Division 4 meet that took place on February 18.

Murdock

Murdock's Avery Murphy had the best finishes of all of the Gardner area, taking a first-place finish in the 1000 meter with a time of 3:05.96. She also finished second in the 1 mile, running a PR of 5:16.37.

Quabbin

Seth Twarong had the best finish for the Panthers of the day, coming in 6th place in the 600 meter with a time of 1:26.50. Collin Lindley finished 27th in the same event at 1:32.00.

In the shot put, Jake Leazott finished 7th with a distance of 43-08.00. Other top finishers of Quabbin are listed below.

Boys 55 Meter: Connor Breeds, 20th place, 6.85

Boys 55 Meter Hurdles: Jinxi Zou, 14th place, 8.64; Ryan Wing, 31st place, 9.20

Boys 4x400 Relay: Seth Twarong, Jacob Bassett, Luis Pagan, Aaron Stein, 15th place, 3:47.22

Boys 4x800 Relay: Collin Lindley, Ryan Wing, Gavin Majoy, Julio Pagan, 20th place, 9:24.16

Boys High Jump: Jacob Bassett, 11th place, 5-08.00

Girls 55 Meter: Paige Lindley, 24th place, 7.90

Girls 300 Meter: Natalia Marchand, 12th place, 43.31

Girls 1 Mile: Annabelle Magill, 10th place, 5:40.13

Girls Shot Put: Abigail Falconi, 16th place, 28-05.25

Girls High Jump: Natalia Marchand, 10th place, 4-10.00

Gardner

Eighth grader Megan Bettez has been having a strong season and showed that once again with her performance in the 2 mile race. Bettez came in 5th, finishing with a time of 12:00.30. Teammate Liberty Osowski finished 23rd in 13:45.47.

Boys 2 Mile: Sokari Jenkins, 12th place, 10:37.79

Boys 4x200 Relay: Ari Cuevas, Jaime Corral, Ethan Silverberg, George Hakim, 13th place, 1:38.35

Boys 4x800 Relay: Telmo Iturbe, Michael Gemelli, Sokari Jenkins, Bradley Bettez, 15th place, 9:13.55

Girls 1000 Meter: Liberty Osowski, 25th place, 3:30.75

Girls 1 Mile: Avah Zelesky, 16th place, 5:56.56

Oakmont

Jayden Brostrom, a consistent top competitor for the Spartans, finished in 9th in the 1 Mile race at the meet, finishing with a time of 4:45.75, which was also a PR. Chayse Parker also ran a PR, coming in 23rd with a time of 4:58.80.

The Oakmont boys 4x800 relay team placed 10th finishing in 9:00.66. Izaiah Dejesus, Chayse Parker, Malikai Kugel-Mackay and Jayden Brostrom made up the team.

Narragansett

The Warriors saw success at the meet, with several top ten finishes by a variety of athletes. Leah Deane finished in third in the 600 meter with a time of 1:40.21. Jordan Baumann grabbed a 6th place finish for the 55 meter hurdles, a time of 8.45. In the high jump, Ashley Duplesis jumped 4-10 to take 10th place.

Boys 2 Mile: Julian Haydar, 21st, 10:59.68

Girls 1000 Meter: Ruby Keating, 11th, 3:18.64

Monty Tech

The Bulldogs had a few athletes with strong finishes at the Division 4 meet. Maya Starsiak finished 21st in the 2 mile with a time of 13:45.01. Christian Altomonte took a 24th-place finish coming in at 10:52.17. Lastly Colin Locke competed in the 1 mile run and came in 30th, finishing with a time of 4:52.45.
