Morlocks, Wingate shine as Norwayne names track after Terry O'Hare

Friday's Dwight Schar Invitational at Norwayne wasn't just another track meet.

It was a historical day for a few different reasons.

The track at Norwayne Community Stadium is now the "Terry O'Hare Track" in honor of the longtime coach who passed away last year, and several athletes set records in a field that featured some of the best runners, throwers and jumpers in Wayne County and the surrounding areas.

It was fitting that Norwayne's own Dillon Morlock had perhaps the most impressive day of anyone at the meet.

Morlock, who won the Division III shot put state title as a sophomore last year, hasn't been challenged much this season, and that continued Friday as he set meet records in both the shot put and discus.

The junior thrower hurled the discus 182-10 to best Dalton's Quentin Lehman, who recently set the school record in the event, by 28 feet, 5 inches. In the shot put, Morlock was just as dominant while competing against Rittman's Tyler Thompson, a fellow state qualifier. Morlock won handily with a toss of 64-7.25 with Thompson placing second with a 59-2.5.

Morlock wasn't the only multi-event winner for Norwayne either. In fact, he wasn't the only Morlock to win multiple events. Allie Morlock swept the throwing events on the girls side with a shot put of 36-9.5 and a discus throw of 128-02, holding off teammate Haley Bittinger in each event.

Bobcats star distance runner Jaylee Wingate, who O'Hare coached in track and cross country, won every open and relay event in which she ran, winning the mile (5:05.25) and two-mile (11:08.42) races and anchoring first-place 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. Norwayne swept the four girls hurdles events.

Norwayne held a ceremony honoring O'Hare before the meet, officially naming the school's track after the legendary coach and educator.

While Norwayne's standouts took centerstage, several other locals had big days.

Dalton's Brianna Chenevey won the 400-meter dash running away with a time of 57.17.

Perhaps none of those had a better day than Dalton's Brianna Chenevey, who ran one of the area's fastest 400-meter dash times ever, shattering Kellie Geiser's school record (1986, 58.05) by running a 57.17. She also won the 100-meter dash (12.50), besting teammate Lauren Clos (12.94). Clos won the 200 with a time of 27.03.
