More Miles-tones: Miles Russell shoots 66 to become youngest to make Korn Ferry Tour cut

One of these days, Miles Russell will be too old to set records and milestones based on his youth.

Not yet.

Russell, a 15-year-old Jacksonville Beach resident, made two eagles in the second round of the LECOM Suncoast Classic on Friday at the Lakewood National Commander Course and with a 66 became the youngest in history to make the cut at a Korn Ferry Tour event.

Russell eagled the 282-yard par-4 fourth hole when he drove the green and made a 15-foot putt, then dropped a 30-foot putt for eagle at the par-5 ninth hole, kicking off a streak of three holes that he played at 4-under.

Russell turned and birdied Nos. 10 and 11 and played the rest of his round at 1-over to easily make the 5-under cut at 8-under 134. He made an 8-foot putt for par at the last hole.

Michelle Wie is the youngest, at 13, to play in a Korn Ferry Tour event but did not qualify for the weekend. The youngest player to make the cut at a PGA Tour event was Guan Tian Liang of China in 2013, at the Masters and the Zurich Classic.

Russell calls breaking the record 'cool'

"That's a cool one for me," Russell said during a post-round media availability. "It's a cool record, and hopefully it will get broken."

Russell said he’s not awed by his surroundings.

"I knew it was going to be a good test to see where I am against some of the best," Russell said. "It's definitely something I'll remember even when times will get hard; I'll remember it when that happens and go with the flow."

Russell hit nine of 13 fairways for the second round in a row and found 13 of 18 greens in the second round.

What’s next for Miles Russell?

Russell will tee off at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the third round, and he will play with two professionals who both are more than double his age: Tain Lee, who is 33 years old, and Billy Kennerly, who is 31.

Lee is from Columbia, Md., and Kennerly from Seattle. Kennerly played college golf at Clemson.

Russell said he's trying not to look ahead.

"The goal was to make the cut and we made it, so we'll see where the weekend goes," he said. "It's a cool record to break. I don't know how much longer ... people are getting so good, so young. It could hold out for a week, you never know, but it's pretty cool right now."
