GIRLS TENNIS

North Canton Hoover's Tess Bucher, Addie Sheil & Ema Papcke win OHSAA district tennis championships

AKRON — It was a banner day for the Hoover girls tennis program at Springside Athletic Club. The No. 1-ranked Vikings claimed two Division I district championships Saturday.

Tess Bucher won the singles district title by defeating Westlake’s Amara Brahmbhatt 6-2, 7-6. The senior won the district singles title at Springside all four years of her high school career, in addition to being a four-time sectional and Federal League champ.

Bucher returns to the state tournament for the fourth time in her career. She has finished in the top four each of the past three seasons, including being the state runner-up a year ago. A University of Kentucky recruit, Bucher is unbeaten this season and is Stark County's career wins leader in girls tennis.

Bucher wasn’t the only Hoover Viking to stand atop the district podium. The doubles team of Addie Sheil and Ema Papcke won a district title by defeating Avon Lake’s Autumn Korey and Amber Korey 6-2, 6-2.

Sheil and Papcke will be joined at the state tournament by the Hoover doubles team of Bridget Fink and Nyla Spangler. Fink and Spangler won the third-place match by defeating Aurora’s Gracie Milano and Kamy Milano 6-2, 6-1.

Bucher, Sheil, Papcke, Fink and Spangler all will compete in the OHSAA state tournament on Thursday and Friday at the College of Wooster.
