Roundup for Oct. 2-3: Sheridan, Meadowbrook volleyball close in on MVL titles

Volleyball: Victorious Newark Catholic, Sheridan face off in five-set clash

Volleyball

Sheridan 25, 25, 25, Philo 16, 11, 16: Jamisyn Stinson collected 14 kills, five digs and two blocks and Reagan Davis went 19-of-19 serving with five aces and 13 digs, as the Generals (16-3, 13-0) closed in on a Muskingum Valley League Big School Division title.

Dylan Fox passed out 21 assists with eight digs, six kills and 8-of-9 serving, Payton Powell was 13-of-13 serving with 11 assists, eight digs and three kills and Nora Saffell had eight kills and three digs in the win.

No leaders were available for Philo.

Crooksville 25, 25, 23, 25, West Muskingum 17, 20, 25, 14: Brynn Lundell had three kills, five digs and 13 points for the Ceramics (4-15, 2-12) in an MVL-Small School win in McLuney.

Lexi Eyman added three aces, three kills and 10 points and Maelee Collins 22 digs for Crooksville, which won for the second straight match. Madi Rambo and Mylee Davis added four kills.

Leaders were not available for West.

Meadowbrook 25, 25, 25, Coshocton 13, 20, 17: The visiting Colts (15-1, 14-1) maintained control of the MVL Small School Division with a sweep of the Lady 'Skins (7-11, 6-7).

Leading the Meadowbrook attack was senior Taylor Sichina with a team-high 19 points, 13 kills, two digs and a pair of blocks. Junior Katie Stoney added 12 points and 12 kills, while senior Avery Black finished with seven points, two kills and nine digs.

Sophomore Addy Sichina handed out a team-high 34 assists with three points, three kills and seven digs. Journey Nicola collected 23 dig and three points and senior Karley Launder chipped in six points, six kills, and six digs for the winners.

Lacey Guthrie led Coshocton with nine kills, nine assists and three ace serves, Kenidi Jackson added seven kills while Lilah Laaper and Leah Mathias each tallied kills, and on defense, Jaeli Tiedt collected 13 digs and Jackson nine.

John Glenn 25, 25, 25, Maysville 16, 10, 20: Emma Briggs totaled 15 kills with five digs and Emma Dolan hit 10 kills and made 12 digs, as the Muskies (9-9, 6-7) topped the Panthers in Big School play.

Aleea Musselman chipped in 12 digs and four kills, Lauren Blair set 28 assists with seven digs and four kills, Sarah Wayne made 10 digs, Sarah Gardinsky hit a pair of kills and Aurora Comiotto added four digs for the winners.

Ashtyn Merlo had six kills and Bekah Scott made 15 digs for Maysville.

New Lex 25, 25, 25, Morgan 10, 20, 21: Trinity Cook recorded 12 kills, 11 digs and three aces and Gracie Newlon made 12 digs with two saves, as the Panthers took care of the Raiders in MVL Small School Division action.

Abby Wilson had 10 kills, five blocks and two aces, Korynn McIntyre hit six kills and Jorja Burkhart passed out 17 assists with three aces for New Lex.

Blair Clawson made 16 digs and Chloe Baker totaled 23 assists with nine digs to lead Morgan. Haven Cook chipped in eight kills, four digs and two aces, Evelyn Newton added seven kills and four digs, Ashtyn Filkins tallied nine digs, Paige Lanning had six kills and six digs and Riley Cunningham had five digs for the Raiders.

Claymont 25, 25, 25, Ridgewood 17, 7, 19: Skylar Wright had 10 kills and 10 digs and Kaylee Belt made 11 digs, as the Generals fell to the Mustangs in IVC play.

Kya Masloski added six points and two kills, Ayanna Masters had three blocks and two kills, Anyssa Cutlip tallied seven digs, six points and two kills and Brynn Waters passed out nine assists with two digs and two points for Ridgewood.

Girls Golf

John Glenn fourth in Division I Sectional: The Muskies missed a team berth in the Division I sectional tournament at Blacklick, shooting 380, as Dublin Jerome (302), Olentangy Orange (335) and Dublin Coffman (348) earned team berths.

Addy Burris led the Muskies by shooting 75 and finished as the sectional runner-up to earn one of the individual berths. Abby McCullough carded a 91, Lily Hoffman a 101 and Emma Paisley a 113 to round out the John Glenn scoring, while Libbee Baughman had 118.

Burris will compete in the district tournament on Oct. 11 at The Links at Echo Springs.

Tri-Valley came in ninth (472), as Kate Burkhart shot 108, Emily Stanford 112, Gwyn Dal Ponte 120 and Kendall Kennedy 132. Ava Paisley also had 136.

New Lex's Everett places 24th in district meet: Panther junior Peyton Everett carded a 100 (53-47) in the Division II Southeast District tournament at Chillicothe Jaycees.

Manchester's Taylor Ralston shot 70 to take medalist honors and earned the individual state berth, while Williamsport Westfall won the team title with 358, edging Circleville, which was second with 361.

Girls Soccer

Sheridan 2, Zanesville 1: Dylan Gibbs and Mikenna Schiele each scored and Emily Malone assisted a goal, as the Generals edged the Lady Devils.

Kendall Harter made four saves for Sheridan, while Rylee McCuen kicked in the lone goal for Zanesville (5-7).

Philo 2, Morgan 0: Victoria Ligon scored off an assist from Lia Unger and Sophie Saunders found Nattalee Jarrett for the other goal, as the Electrics improved to 7-6-1 in a non-league win.

Keeper Scarlett Shanks and defenders Emily Stockdale, Avery Mahon, Marley Harper, Ellah Stoneburner, Sara Searls and Hannah Foster aided the shutout effort.

Heath 4, New Lex 1: The Panthers and Bulldogs were tied at 1 at the half, but Heath pulled away in the second half for the win.

Fairfield Union 6, West Muskingum 0: The Falcons shutout the Tornadoes in non-league play.

Boys Soccer

Philo 6, Ridgewood 0: Andrew Van Meter, Trace Wilson and Logan Lyon kicked two goals apiece, as the Electrics improved to 6-7-1.

Wilson added two assists, Gage Wickham, Ashton Farris and Coy Howard assisted scores and Hunter Wallace had the shutout.

John Glenn 2, Coshocton 0: The Muskies scored twice in the second half to pick up a MVL win over the Redskins.

Keeper Kobe Bylaw stopped 17 shots for Coshocton, which was outshot 30-5. No leaders were available for John Glenn.

Tri-Valley 4, West Muskingum 0: Sam Schott kicked in two goals and Yuvi Bastola scored once with three assists, as the Scotties dropped the Tornadoes in MVL play.

Dominic Dale also had a goal, Nick Flarey added an assist and Owen Harney and Lincoln Rhodes combined on the shutout.

Monday's results

Girls Soccer

John Glenn 2, Dover 1: Riley Zamensky kicked the go-ahead goal with 2:48 left in the first half, and the Muskies held on for a nonleague road win.

Zamensky assisted on Becca Spohn's goal that started the scoring before Dover's Miley Patton tied the game. Dover had a chance to tie the game, but missed a penalty kick with 9:01 left.

John Glenn held a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Faith Lemon had four saves.

Mount Vernon 4, Maysville 0: The Yellow Jackets rolled to a nonleague win at the Maysville Athletic Complex.

Johnstown 1, Coshocton 0: The Johnnies scored with 1:19 left in the first half on a long shot that bounced into the goal, then held on for a nonleague win at Stewart Field.

Coshocton leaned on its back line defense to shut down Johnstown scoring ace Cameron Goddard, but couldn't find the equalizer, while keeper Courtney Snyder made six saves.

Boys Soccer

Cambridge 2, Harrison Central 0: The Bobcats used a strong defense to shut out visiting Harrison Central at McFarland Stadium.

“We really played a good game tonight,” Cambridge coach JR Fox said. “The defense was outstanding in the shutout and I’m very proud of the way the boys played tonight.”

Bryce Hearing and Aidan Castello each scored a goal, while Markel Villapalos picked up an assist. Rylan Mathews recorded one save for Cambridge (5-8-1).

Zanesville 5, Sheridan 2: The Blue Devils extended a one-goal halftime lead by scoring twice in the second half to secure a nonleague road win.

Jim Swain and Xavier Weisbarth Rodriguez scored goals and Brady Bevis had several saves for Sheridan.

Maysville 8, Rosecrans 5: The Panthers broke open a 3-3 tie with four straight goals in the second half at the Maysville Athletic Complex.

Grady Labishak scored three times and Tizian Schmeltzer twice for Rosecrans.

Cam Parker collected a hat trick with an assist, Drew Daniels had two goals and two assists, Cyrus Melick scored a goal with two assists, Cam Morrison and Carson Shockley also had goals and Shepp Cosgrave made six stops for the Panthers.

Golf

Sheridan girls sixth in Division I sectional: The Generals totaled 379 at Pickaway Country Club, as the top three teams advanced.

Morgan Wamer led Sheridan with an 85, missing a district berth by one stroke, while Haven Jenkins chipped in an 89, Ryan Satterfield a 94 and Casey Peach and Abby Gutridge each had 111.

Grove City won with 350 followed by Hilliard Darby's 353 and Gahanna Lincoln's 370. Darby's Saylor Wharff and Brielle Starnes tied for medalist honors with 76.

Crooksville's White ties for 8th in SE District: Ceramics junior Bo White carded an 81 to tie for eighth overall, as two individuals and two teams earned state berths in the Division III Southeast District tournament at Elks Country Club.

Lucasville Valley's Cameron Phillips and South Webster's Owen Mault tied for medalist honors with a 70, but Phillips won the first playoff hole. West Union edged North Adams 339-340 to claim the team state berth.

Buckeye Trail sixth at East District tournament: The Warriors shot 352 in the Division III East District tournament at River Greens.

Harry Miller led Trail with an 85, Washington Miller added an 87, Carson Raber shot an 89 and Blake Miller had 91 to round out the scoring.

Hiland and Garaway each shot 322, but the Hawks earned the state berth on a fifth-man tiebreaker. The Pirates' Trace Gibson carded a 72 to earn medalist honors and the individual state berth.

Volleyball

New Lexington 25, 25, 27, 15, Johnstown 18, 27, 25, 18: Trinity Cook piled up 22 kills with 14 digs, and Gracie Newlon added three aces in the Panthers' nonleague victory.

Abby Wilson added three blocks with 17 kills, Chloe Dick had 11 kills with 16 digs, and Jorja Burkhart amassed 46 assists.

Tri-Valley 15, 25, 14, 25, 10, Cols. DeSales 25, 21, 25, 20, 15: Eva Dittmar had 15 kills and Ingrid Dittmar 21 assists for the Scotties (11-7), who suffered another close loss in nonleague play.

Ingrid Dittmar also had four aces and three blocks; Sami Cameron chipped in five blocks and Annika Collet five kills and six blocks.

Crooksville 25, 21, 25, 25, Sugar Grove Berne Union 22, 25, 9, 14: Mylee Davis posted 13 kills with four blocks and Madi Rambo seven aces with 10 kills to pace the Ceramics to a nonleague win.

Lexi Eyman added three aces with eight kills and Paige Frame added seven kills for Crooksville. Brynn Lundell chipped in three aces and four kills.
