MLB trade deadline: Detroit Tigers send Lorenzen to Phillies, E-Rod blocks Dodgers deal

It didn't happen fast, but the Detroit Tigers finally made a move at the trade deadline, sending starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The team also reportedly agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers to send E-Rod to the West Coast, but he blocked it using his 10-team no-trade clause.

LORENZEN TRADE DETAILS: Detroit Tigers trade Michael Lorenzen to Philadelphia Phillies for prospect Hao-Yu Lee

The MLB trade deadline is at 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 1, meaning the clock is ticking for teams who want to add to their current rosters, and for teams who don't want to lose out on an opportunity to pick up an asset or two.

The Tigers certainly fall into the latter of those two categories as they currently sit 12 games below .500 and 6.5 games below the Minnesota Twins for first place. Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris has shown patience waiting to see if this team can get within striking distance of winning their division, which has been the worst in baseball by a wide margin in 2023.

DETROIT TIGERS NEWSLETTER: Why E-Rod, Michael Lorenzen might be steals at trade deadline

But time has run out for the Tigers to prove their group shouldn't be separated, particularly over the last few weeks, as the club has lost three straight series (San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins).

Some major names from around the league have already been dealt, most notably former Tigers ace Max Scherzer, who was traded from the New York Mets to the Texas Rangers on Saturday in a package that included Luisangel Acuña, the younger brother of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr.

The good news for the Tigers is there is a pretty decent market for starting pitchers and their two best trade pieces are starters.

WHO STAYS AND WHO GOES: MLB trade deadline: Detroit Tigers have obvious candidates, but who else could be moved?

Eduardo Rodriguez has three years and $49 million left on the contract that he signed with the Tigers, but he has an opt-out that will allow him to become a free agent this offseason, which he almost certainly will do because of the numbers he's posted this year. Rodriguez has a 2.95 ERA with 21 walks (6% walk rate) and 91 strikeouts (25.9% strikeout rate) in 88⅓ innings over 15 starts this season. He's said he likes being in Detroit, but if they don't deal him, they risk losing him for nothing.

The same could be said right right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen, who the Tigers picked up in the offseason on a one-year, $8.5 million contract. Lorenzen has certainly proved he can be an asset for the Tigers, especially since getting selected to the All-Star team. He faltered a bit in his last outing against the Angels, but Lorenzen came into the game with a 21⅔ inning scoreless streak.

The Tigers eventually found a trade partner in the Philadelphia Phillies, who are run by former Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski. In return, the Tigers bring back Hao-Yu Lee, an infielder with the Phillies.
