After a disappointing stint with the New York Mets, Darin Ruf is rejoining the Giants' organization on a minor league contract, the team announces Saturday morning.

The Athletic's Jayson Stark first reported news of the agreement between Ruf and the Giants.

In addition to the Ruf signing, the Giants also announced that catcher Roberto Perez has been placed on the 60-day Injured List with a right rotator cuff strain. The veteran backstop sustained the injury against the Kansas City Royals in the home opener on Friday.

Austin Wynns, who played well for the Giants last season, had his contract selected from Triple-A Sacramento.

Joey Bart has been assigned to Triple-A Sacramento to begin a rehab assignment as he recovers from a lower back strain.

Ruf didn't make the Mets' Opening Day roster this season, was designated for assignment on March 27 and released on April 2.

Now the 36-year-old has a chance to get back on track with the franchise he had the most success with.

Before the Giants traded Ruf to the Mets last season for J.D. Davis and three minor league pitchers, the infielder/outfielder hit .248/.358/.455 with 32 homers and 99 RBI in 247 games over three seasons with San Francisco.

Ruf was a valuable and versatile option for manager Gabe Kapler, who was able to use him in left field and at first base.

The Giants' 40-man roster is full and they likely will have to make a few moves in the coming days to get catchers Austin Wynns and Gary Sanchez on the team with Roberto Perez sustaining a right shoulder strain in Friday's home opener.

So it's unclear when Ruf might get a chance with the big-league club. But Ruf likely will need time at Triple-A Sacramento or at the Giants' minor league complex in Arizona to get back up to speed.
