The second annual MLB draft lottery takes place Tuesday at the MLB Winter Meetings. The lottery is held to decide the top picks in the upcoming 2024 MLB draft next July.

The lottery is in its second year of existence, with the Pittsburgh Pirates winning the 2022 lottery. (The Pirates later used the pick on LSU pitcher Paul Skenes.) The introduction of a lottery system, which the NBA and NHL both use, was added to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement in 2022.

The Detroit Tigers, after going 78-84 last season, have a 1.8% chance of winning the No. 1 pick Tuesday, entering the day 10th in the order. They moved up three spots to the third overall pick in last year's lottery and last summer selected high school outfielder Max Clark. The Tigers on Monday night announced a contract extension for manager A.J. Hinch.

The lottery has 17 of the 18 non-playoff teams eligible, with the league's three-worst teams sharing identical odds (18.3%) at capturing the top pick: Oakland Athletics, Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies.
