MLB announces Rangers will host 2024 All-Star Game at new Globe Life Field

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred announced on Thursday that the Texas Rangers will host the 2024 All-Star Game at their new stadium in Arlington, Texas.

"Major League Baseball is pleased to award the 2024 All-Star Game to the Rangers and the Cities of Arlington and Fort Worth, which presented a robust bid for All-Star Week," Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "The Rangers stepped up under difficult circumstances and Globe Life Field served as terrific host for the 2020 Postseason, including the World Series. We are excited to once again feature Baseball’s newest ballpark on a global stage next summer."

All-Star Game destinations aren't picked randomly. MLB considers how long it's been since a team or city has hosted the game (the Rangers last hosted in 1995), and whether the team has recently built a new stadium. Showing off new stadiums has long been part of the All-Star Game, and the Rangers have one that opened back in 2020: Globe Life Field.

And as Manfred mentioned, Globe Life Field was one of just two MLB stadiums to host any games with fans during the 2020 pandemic-shortened season. Along with Minute Maid Park in Houston, Globe Life Field hosted the first few rounds of the 2020 postseason. The World Series was played entirely at Globe Life, and the Rangers were finally were able to open the stadium to fans in 2021.

Where will the next All-Star Games be?

Announcing the Rangers as host means three of the next four All-Star Games are locked down. On July 11, 2023, the Seattle Mariners will host at T-Mobile Park, and will mark the third time the Mariners have hosted the Midsummer Classic. (They also hosted in 1979 and 2001.) The Philadelphia Phillies are hosting in 2026 to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of America, which will be a yearlong celebration across the entire city of Philadelphia. The Phillies last hosted the All-Star Game in 1996, eight years before their current ballpark, Citizens Bank Park, opened.

That means 2025 is the only All-Star Game without a host. The Boston Red Sox were "lobbying hard" back in March, but there hasn't been a peep since then. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the leading candidates are the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves, who were supposed to host back in 2021 but had the privilege revoked by MLB due to the restrictive voting law passed by the Georgia legislature.
