Mississippi State women's basketball dropped its SEC opener at home against Vanderbilt on Thursday, and the road to that first conference win doesn't get much easier. MSU travels to face No. 1 South Carolina on Sunday at Colonial Life Arena.
The Bulldogs have dropped their lost five contests to the Gamecocks (13-0, 1-0 SEC) dating back to 2019. During that skid, MSU (13-3, 0-1) has been outscored by an average of 11.6 points per game.

Sunday marks the second time Mississippi State is facing South Carolina since Sam Purcell was hired as the Bulldogs' coach in March 2022. Last season, MSU lost 58-51 in Starkville. It was one of just six games in which the Gamecocks didn't have a double-digit margin of victory.
After losing a large part of its core, including Aliyah Boston, who was the top pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft, South Carolina started the season as the nation's fourth-ranked team.
However, after a resounding season-opening win against Notre Dame in France, the Gamecocks were back atop the national polls after the first week and have been there since.
