Mississippi State women's basketball assistant Corry Irvin hired by Chicago State

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State women's basketball assistant coach Corry Irvin has been hired by Chicago State as its next coach, the Cougars announced Wednesday.

"Thank you (Irvin) for joining my staff 2 years ago and bringing so much to our program and myself," MSU coach Sam Purcell wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. "You will be missed. No doubt you will crush this next move."

Irvin's departure comes after MSU and assistant Murriel Page parted ways last week, a source with knowledge of the move told the Clarion Ledger. The source requested anonymity because the move hasn't been officially announced.

Irvin has been at Mississippi State since 2022 when she was hired as part of Purcell's first staff. She spent two seasons with the Bulldogs, helping lead the team to a second-round appearance in the 2023 NCAA Tournament and a WBIT quarterfinals appearance this year.

Irvin is a native of Illinois who is familiar with the Chicago area. She came to MSU after assistant coaching stints at Illinois and DePaul while also holding head coaching experience at Saint Xavier University.

She also spent 18 seasons at Whitney Young High School, where she was named the National Federation of State High School Associations coach of the year three times and the Chicago Public Schools female coach of the year five times.

As was reported by the Clarion Ledger last week, Fred Castro has emerged as a top candidate to replace Page. Gabe Lazo, who has been an assistant for Purcell since 2022, is expected to return for a third season.
