Mississippi State-Alabama final score, highlights from college football Week 5

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State football is looking to do something it hasn't done since 2007: Beat No. 12 Alabama and coach Nick Saban.

The Bulldogs (2-2, 0-2 SEC) welcomed the Crimson Tide (3-1, 1-0) to Davis Wade Stadium on Saturday night hoping to score an upset and pick up their first SEC win under first-year coach Zach Arnett.

Instead, MSU suffered a 40-17 defeat.

Alabama ripped off 14 straight points in a 57-second span in the first quarter to pull ahead, quieting a crowd that had been raucous in the first half of the quarter. Mississippi State settled in, adding a 31-yard field goal from Kyle Ferrie at the beginning of the second quarter and then a 15-yard TD run from Mike Wright.

But things unraveled a bit before halftime. A 2-yard Jase McClellan run made it 24-10, and a Will Rogers interception led to Milroe's second TD run (this time from 10 yards).

Mississippi State trailed 31-10 at the break The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 31-17 on the opening possession of the second half, but it was all in vain en route to MSU's 16th straight loss in the series.

Alabama 14, Mississippi State 3: Kyle Ferrie 31-yard field goal

That's better. Mississippi State looked like it was in rhythm and played with balance. A Jo'Quavious Marks 29-yard run helped set up the first scoring drive for the Bulldogs, with 12:44 remaining in the quarter.
