Minor league team's new promotional jersey will make you hungry

We’ve reached the time of year when minor league teams start announcing their special promotions for the upcoming season.

Of course, many of these promotions will be rehashes of successful past promotions, only with slightly different twists. For example, we’ll see a lot of new spins on bobbleheads giveaways and jersey designs. The hope, though, is to create something unique enough to stand out, which is nearly impossible these days given all the variations and combinations that we’ve seen.

With that in mind, we think the Reading Fightin Phils, the Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, have a promotion and specifically a new jersey that most will enjoy.

On Aug. 7, Reading will play its annual morning game. And when they do, they’ll be donning jerseys featuring a certain delectable item.

That’s right, for one day the Reading Fightin Phils will become the Reading Whoopies as they pay tribute to the cake/pie/sandwich hybrid known as the Whoopie Pie.

As part of the promotion, the first 2,000 adults will receive Whoopie Pies thanks to BARTA. In addition, all fans that enter the stadium before 8 a.m. will receive a free hot dog and coffee. First pitch against the Akron Rubber Ducks is scheduled for 9:35 a.m. local time.

After the game, the game-worn jerseys will then be auctioned for charity.

Here’s a descriptions of the uniforms from the team’s press release:

The Reading Whoopies players will be wearing Whoopie Pie inspired uniforms for this special event. The hats are designed to look like a giant Whoopie Pie with chocolate brown panels and a stream of delicious white cream in the middle. A “Joyful Whoopie Pie” mascot is printed on the front wearing a red Fightin Phils baseball cap with the old-school “R” logo. The Whoopie Pie mascot is also carrying a flag that states the word, “Whoopie!” This celebrates the local legend that when children would find Whoopie Pies in their lunches they would all shout, “Whoopie!” Like the Whoopie Pie caps, the jerseys will be chocolate brown in color, with “Whoopies” written in cream filling across the chest.

Are you not craving a Whoopie Pie right about now?
