The Central College cross country teams took quite the trip to Connecticut over the weekend.

The Dutch men placed third in the 25-team meet that included eight nationally ranked NCAA Division III teams and fifth-year senior Caleb Silver ran to an individual victory in a new school-record time of 24 minutes, 13.4 seconds over the 8-kilometer course in Waterford, Conn. The former BCLUW (Conrad) prep and 2022 All-American in cross country last November topped the previous Dutch mark of 24:27 set by fellow senior Noah Jorgenson at the Augustana (Ill.) Interregional Invitational while topping 198 other runners and leads off this this edition of the WEEKEND UPDATE of the best performances by Iowa-based collegiate and postcollegiate distance runners and triathletes.

"He's a gamer, there's no doubt about that," coach Joe Dunham said in a Central athletics press release. "Caleb did a really nice job of navigating the race. He ran really smart, got out in position early and then he just kind of went with the runner from St. Olaf. In about the last 600 meters he just made a move and took the win."

Silver's time Saturday, run on a flat, twisting, oceanside course hosted by Connecticut College, was 4.2 seconds ahead of St. Olaf's Will Kelly. Silver is a two-time NCAA Division III meet qualifier.

Jorgenson, a former Sidney prep, grabbed a sixth-place finish in 24:41.40 as Central's No. 2 runner. Freshman Jack Brown, a former Norwalk prep, and fellow freshman and former Gilbert prep William Wadsley rounded out the Dutch scorers. Brown was 50th in 25:39.7, a new best by 1:12, while Wadsley grabbed 61st in 25:46.5. The 26th-ranked (by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) Dutch scored 128 points to trail only No. 16 St. Olaf (69) and Tufts University (75).

The 23rd-ranked Central women's team fared even better, with the Dutch scoring 130 points and capturing second in the team race that featured 10 nationally-ranked squads. Senior Caroline McMartin squashed her own school record by running 21:16.7 over the 6K course and placing fourth overall. McMartin's previous best was 21:50 set at the Augustana Interregional last year. McMartin is a former Pella High prep.

Senior Megan Johnson was seventh in 21:23.7, a time that puts the former Aplington-Parkersburg runner at No. 2 all-time at Central behind McMartin. Johnson improved more than a minute over her previous 6K best. Junior Addison Parrott, a former Danville prep, moved up to fourth on Central's all-time list after placing 19th in 22:04.2. The final varsity runners for Central were senior Lindsay Davidson (69th, 23:05.0) and sophomore Leah Bontrager (70th, 23:05.2). Davidson is a former Northwood-Kensett prep while Bontrager attended Hillcrest Academy. Both times were personal bests. No. 5 New York University won the title with 36 points.

Moving to NCAA Division I, where former Ballard record-setting performer Paityn Noe placed third at a soggy Virginia Pre-Nationals field on a soggy Panorama Farms course in Charlottesville on Saturday. The Arkansas true freshman, making her debut at 6K, moved up steadily during the race while running 19:49.6 and leading the No. 19 Razorbacks for the second consecutive race.

Noe moved up steadily throughout the race. She was 12th after 1K and 11th after 3K, then reeled off splits of 3:16.5 and 3:23.9 to move to eighth and then third. Her final kilometer was run in 3:11.0 to maintain her third-place standing.

"I was excited to have some tough competition and to get after it," Noe said in a video posted on the team's website. "Just a little bit longer (distance). But it's the same race feeling. We've been kind of an underdog. People haven't given us as much credit. We're younger. I'm super excited to see how we do going into postseason."

Arkansas finished second in the team race with 90 points. No. 6 BYU, with junior and individual winner Carmen Alder in 19:36.2, took the team title with 32 points on the course that will host the national title next month. Oregon junior Maddy Elmore was second in 19:47.0.

Liberty also competed and junior Marie Hostetler ran as the No. 3 athlete for the Flames. Hostetler crossed the line in 21:47.0, a new best for the former Mid-Prairie prep, for 131st place. Liberty was 20th in the team race.

In the men's Blue 8K competition, Minnesota junior Noah Kohut-Jackson placed 12st overall in 24:48.7. The former Ames High product was the No. 4 runner for the Gophers, who ended up 22nd in the team race.

The Iowa State teams went to the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wis., and helped their standing for qualification for NCAA nationals by placing 11th (women) and 13th (men) on a soggy morning Friday. The 13th-ranked Cyclone women scored 381 points to top No. 22 Ole Miss (382), No. 8 Washington (383), No. 10 Colorado (395), No. 20 Utah (419), No. 23 Wisconsin (421), No. 28 Colorado State (437), No. 18 Furman (438), No. 25 Syracuse (480), No. 21 North Carolina (510), No. 14 Providence (536) and No. 26 New Mexico (580). The No. 2 runner for the Cyclones was fifth-year senior and former Glenwood 2018 state cross country champion Janette Schraft. Scraft ran 20:48.2 over the 6K course to take 59th place. Redshirt sophomore and former Johnston prep Bella Heikes placed 136th in 21:26.1. Junior and former Charles City prep Kiki Connell grabbed 150th place in 21:34.0. Sophomore and former Iowa City Liberty High athlete Ashlyn Keeney ran 22:10.1 for 207th. No. 2-ranked Northern Arizona scored 52 points to topple No. 1 N.C. State (95) in the team race.

Former Ankeny High prep Tim Sindt, a junior, also placed 147th in 24:39.9. The team champion was No. 1-ranked and defending champion Northern Arizona with 76 points.

Switching now to the roads and Sunday's IMT Des Moines Marathon and support races, where former Des Moines Roosevelt prep Emma Huston repeated as women's half marathon champion. The Drake University record holder in the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters on the track ran 1:15:00 to win by 3:46. Only three womenhave run a half marathon in Iowa faster than 1:15:00: Diane Nukuri at the 2014 Dam to Dam in 1:13:17, Huston in 1:13:48 at IMT last year and Pasca Myers at the 2013 Drake half marathon in 1:14:32.

"That was the plan (challenging her course record), but I just wasn't feeling it today," Huston, 29, said. "The legs didn't feel very good. It was an off day. I'm a little disappointed."

Runablaze Iowa's Jordan Winke, a former Albia prep and University of Iowa runner, finished third in 1:18:50 for a new personal-best time. Running Wild Elite's Andrea Ertz set a new club record in 1:20:03 while finishing fourth. Ertz is a former Marion prep and Mount Mercy All-American. Finishing fifth was another former Marion prep, Maddie Bach. Bach ran 1:25:55.

A stout men's field showed up for the half marathon and Runablaze's Cody Baele, 28, broke through for his first IMT victory over a third-place finish in 2021 and a runner-up effort last year. The Des Moines resident overcame swirling winds to run 1:06:20 and hold off a late charge from former South Dakota State runner Ben Olson by seven seconds.

"He (Olson) surely gave me a run for my money," Baele said. "I was able to keep the pace that I was going honest."

Runablaze's Garret Ehlers, 32, of Sioux City ran a new best of 1:06:44 to take third place one week after posting the fourth best 5K, 14:21, in Iowa road racing history at the Blazing 5K. Ehlers is a former Morningside College five-time All-American and current Mustangs assistant coach from Ida Grove.

Landing just off the podium in fourth was Runablaze athlete and former Wartburg College athlete Sam Pinkowski, 25, of Des Moines. Pinkowski ran 1:07:49. RWE's Trevor Albert, a former Cardinal (Eldon) prep and Grand View University standout, made his half marathon debut a successful one by running 1:07:53 for fifth. Running a new best for the half marathon in sixth place was Runablaze's Tyler Lance of Algona in 1:08:15. Crown Running's Kyle Pape of Ankeny crossed in 1:10:03 for seventh. Pape is a former Dubuque Senior and Central College standout. Runablaze's Caleb Benzing, a former Northwestern College and East Marshall athlete now coaching at Norwalk, ran a new best of 1:10:08 for eighth. Both are 29 and both Runablaze athletes.

Former Iowa runner Noah Healy of the Running Wild Elite team was 18th in 1:13:29.

Myers, the 2014 Grandma's Marathon champion, took runner-up honors in the women's marathon. The Ames resident, 37, toured the 26.2-mile course around Des Moines in 2:45:28 to finish less than three minutes behind winner Leah Rotich of Kenya.

Runablaze's Luke Guttormson picked up the final podium spot and $500 for third place in the men's marathon after running 2:33:03. Guttormson recently completed his eligibility at Loras College. The women's winner was Anna Bergman in 18:59, just four seconds ahead of Johnston prep Lexie Wisham. The course was about short by about 50-75 meters.

Several Americans were trying to nail down a qualifying time for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando, Fla., in February at the Bakline's McKirdy Micro races at Valley Cottage, N.Y., on Saturday. Running around a 2.93-mile loop course, former Iowa resident Stan Linton of Crawfordsville, Fla., came the closest, running 2:18:47 for 39th place. Linton needed to run under 2:18 to qualify. He also missed the Trials standard by 29 seconds at Grandma's Marathon in June.

Former South Winneshiek prep and Luther College runner Adam Bohach, 39, of rural Cresco covered the distance in 2:21:32 after having early an early bathroom break and falling off the main pack. The Runablaze athlete rallied for 51st place. His teammate, Blake Whalen, was 64th in 2:26:16. Whalen, 28, of Des Moines is a former Dubuque Senior and Iowa Central athlete. Former University of Iowa student Brooke Slayman, 34, of Solon produced a solid 2:40:56 effort in the marathon for 21st among the women.
