Mikey Williams: Memphis basketball star signee's preliminary hearing postponed | Report

Mikey Williams, who is facing six felony gun charges, has had his preliminary hearing postponed to July 12, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The preliminary hearing was originally scheduled for June 29. But, during a readiness conference in El Cajon (Calif.) Superior Court Thursday, Williams' attorney Troy P. Owens Jr. requested the postponement because “we have just received a significant amount of discovery."

As a result, Judge Harry M. Elias rescheduled a new readiness conference for July 3.

Williams, a 5-star Memphis basketball signee, was arrested in April and charged with five counts of assault with a firearm and one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle during an incident outside his California home on March 27. Williams allegedly fired at a car carrying five people, including three under 18, following "a verbal argument about guests in the house being asked to leave," according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. If convicted on all counts, Williams could face up to 28 years in prison.

In April, Owens said the allegations against Williams “are not an accurate reflection of what happened," adding in an open letter, "we are confident that the truth will come to light."

Williams, who pleaded not guilty to all charges on April 20, signed with Memphis in November 2022. He is one of several Tiger signees who has not yet reported to campus.

San Diego County Deputy District Attorney George Modlin told reporters Thursday there has been "nothing significant" in terms of discussions about a potential plea deal.

“It’s part of the process, and Mr. Owens and I have been in contact," Modlin said. “If we get (to the preliminary hearing), that’s when most things will be revealed.”

MIKEY WILLIAMS: Memphis basketball coach Penny Hardaway remains in 5-star recruit's corner

Memphis coach Penny Hardaway remains supportive of Williams.

“Obviously, every coach has an opportunity to detach from a situation if they want to, (but) I’m not that type,” Hardaway said last week. “We have to let everything play itself out first and not overreact. I’m not calling him guilty before he’s innocent. A lot of people do that. But, for me, we’re just staying the course until we figure this whole entire thing out.”
