PHOENIX — Mike McDaniel is probably the first NFL coach to wear a quilted bright yellow Bottega Veneta leather backpack to a Penn State pro day.

McDaniel is the NFL's most swagged-out, well-styled head coach. And so at the recent NFL owners meetings, The Palm Beach Post sought answers to one of the league's hottest questions.

What is it with the trendy backpacks, shoes and watches?

"I've always just kind of liked fashion," McDaniel explained. "Sometimes people, I would say, agree with your style. Sometimes they don't. But it's kind of like my personality. I just kind of go with what I think makes me feel like me."

McDaniel, 40, rarely touches his cellphone and does not use social media.

But when he does have a few minutes to spare, his vice would be shopping.

"Sometimes I'll randomly go online and look at shoes, or backpacks, generally are my two favorite things," McDaniel said. "The Bottega backpack, I just saw it, thought it was cool how it wasn't stitched. I just thought, 'I've never seen anything like that.'"

McDaniel is one of one.

He's witty and humorous and engaging. And, yes, he really loves cool sneakers.

"No, I don't think it's more than 50 (pairs)," McDaniel said. "If I would have been a head coach for a long time, it would have been a lot more. It might be up to 50. It's not. It's not like a crazy display collection."

But McDaniel has the best shoe game of any coach in the league.

“Come on, man. Y’all know Mike has swag," Dolphins running back Jeff Wilson said. "He was the first head coach I’ve probably seen on the sideline with some Nike Supremes on. Come on, man — what coach does that?"

McDaniel does not discriminate as he's been seen wearing Jordan Brand and Adidas.

He owns some incredible watches, including a rose gold Breitling.

He's been seen wearing everything from a leather bomber jacket to rolled-up sweatpants.

"We have one of the swaggiest coaches in the league," Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill confirms.

When Dolphins general manager Chris Grier called around the league before interviewing McDaniel, he was described as intelligent, quirky and, well, fashionable.

"One thing that was always interesting that everyone was talking about was like the most swagged-out guy and how he looks," Grier said. "He’s just got this way and personality of how he deals with people."
