Midgets prove dominant on the road
Jan. 6—DICKINSON — The Dickinson High School boys and girls basketball programs are both starting the new year with a string of road game victories.
Their second away outing was Thursday. Both teams traveled to Watford City and battled the Wolves. The girls' encounter with Watford City saw them rally from a 16-point halftime deficit, winning 54-47. For the boys, a blowout victory over Watford City have them on a three game winning streak, initiated prior to the winter break.
The Midgets, who struggled to get back-to-back wins in the early season, fought hard and persevered over great odds in defeating the Wolves home court advantage.
Watford City applied heavy pressure and was able to convert off of turnovers. Going into the second half with a 36-20 lead perhaps relaxed the team, setting a stage for Dickinson to show their physical strength and hold the Wolves to just 11 points.
DHS seniors made strong contributions in the second half to pull off the comeback. Point guard Emily Ash led her team in points and assists, with 23 and four respectively. Her shot accuracy made her dangerous from the outside, while keen intuition allowed her to also find open looks for her teammates.
Caton Pearcy also hit double digits with 13 points, and had two assists. Baylee Berg had quick fingers with four steals, coming second to junior Kenzie Hoff, who forced five turnovers.
Forward player Sadie Stevenson, a junior, was another key contributor to the Midgets' victory. She nearly had a double-double on the night with nine points and 11 rebounds. Ash and Hoff tied for second in boards with five each.
DHS started 2023 with consecutive blowout victories, first with 29 points over Williston followed by a full 30 over Watford City on Thursday.
Points were hard to come by for the Wolves, who could not find success from beyond the arc the entire game. Meanwhile, DHS scored 42 points from downtown.
Senior guards Alex Dvorak and Tyrese Annace were on fire from three-point range with four buckets each.
Senior post player Drew Biel was two-for-two from the outside. After collecting 10 rebounds he would end the night two points shy of a double-double.
Junior Dante Oyugi scored seven points in the game and was automatic from the charity stripe, going 4-for-4.
Both programs will continue on the road this weekend, as they will be heading to Jamestown. The girls currently sit above Jamestown in the WDA standings. The boys are at .500, same as the Blue Jays, and will be looking to move past them.
