Michigan State vs. Washington score, highlights: Huskies cap off tough week for Spartans

After a troubled week, there was a lot of talk about how Michigan State would come out against No. 8 Washington. The answer was clear by the end of the first quarter.

Noah Kim completed just 12 of 31 passes and was eventually sat down for Katin Houser — who eventually led the Spartans to their only touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter — once the game was out of reach. Nathan Carter was never involved, as Michigan State was forced to air it out all game, and MSU mustered just 261 yards of total offense.

The defense didn't fare better in the 41-7 loss. Michael Penix Jr. showed why he is a Heisman Trophy candidate this season, completing 27 of 35 attempts for 473 yards and four touchdowns. The Michigan State secondary was utterly overmatched against Washington's stable of receivers, with Rome Odunze and Ja'Lynn Polk both notching over 100 yards receiving (Jalen McMillan would have crossed the century mark as well had he not been injured in the first half).

Harlon Barnett tried to reel in the chaos for Michigan State, but mistake after mistake piled up. Michigan State incurred 11 penalties for 83 yards, with several coming in high-leverage situations. It was the kind of game they Spartans will want in the rear-view quickly.

The good news for MSU is this is the toughest opponent they'll face until Michigan comes to East Lansing on Oct. 21. Washington is living up to its preseason hype through three games, as the Pac-12 as a whole continues to impress.

It wouldn't be shocking to see Houser get some more looks in the future. Although Kim shouldn't lose the starting job based on a game that was an all-around throwaway such as this one, Houser did have a nice 61-yard completion to Christian Fitzpatrick and looked solid on his bootleg touchdown. Michigan State dealt with a lot of adversity this week. Now it's time to look ahead to Maryland.

Michigan State vs. Washington updates, highlights

All times Eastern.

Final score: Washington 41, Michigan State 7

8:41 p.m. -- Tybo Rogers has earned himself a lot of carries moving forward. The clock runs down, and Michigan State falls to Washington 41-7

8:35 p.m. -- Washington is keeping the ball on the ground, but still ripping off yardage in chunks. Now Dre Butler is down on the field for Michigan State in pain.

Touchdown Michigan State: Washington 41, Michigan State 7

8:32 p.m. -- Houser runs a keeper around the corner, and dives into the end zone to spare Michigan State a shutout. MSU is on the board.

8:25 p.m. -- Injuries in two of the last three plays, first it was Barkins for Washington and now it's a Spartan down, Tyneil Hopper being carted off.

8:20 p.m. -- MSU FINALLY takes the top off on a play. Houser put a perfect throw on Christian Fitzpatrick, who is brought down deep in Washington territory. Beautiful throw from Houser. It goes for 61 yards.

8:20 p.m. -- Carter is getting quite a few looks here for MSU as both teams just try to duck injury over the last 10 minutes. Really good run here from Jordon Simmons to keep the drive going.

8:16 p.m. -- Michigan State's defense makes a play as a ball goes off the hands of Taeshaun Lyons and gets intercepted inside the 5-yard line. MSU shrugs off a 50-yard completion the play before to get the ball back to the offense.

8:10 p.m. -- Kim is now out of the game in favor of Katin Houser. Houser rolls left on his first play and slightly underthrows Carr on a tough throw.

8:06 p.m. -- Michigan State gets a stop on Morris and the Washington offense on fourth-and-6. Morris threw it away as he scrambled right, and Michigan State gets the ball back.

End of third quarter: Washington 41, Michigan State 0

7:57 p.m. -- NOW Penix's day is done. Morris takes over for Washington.

Washington Field Goal: Washington 41, Michigan State 0

7:51 p.m. -- The series ends with another field goal, pushing Washington up over the 40-point mark.

7:46 p.m. -- The track meet continues, as this time Penix airs it out to Odunze on the sideline for a big catch. That brings Washington inside the MSU red zone, and Penix is up over 400 yards.

7:42 p.m. -- Penix muffed a snap and the series was going to end in a three-and-out and a punt, but an illegal substitution keeps the ball with Washington. Michigan State just has not been there mentally.

7:38 p.m. -- Apologies, Penix is still running the Washington offense. Julius Buelow is hurt 2for the Washington offensive line.

7:34 p.m. -- Michigan State notched a first down, but the series results in a punt. Michael Penix Jr. is out of the game, and Dylan Morris takes over the offense.

7:29 p.m. -- The call is overturned, and Michigan State will start with the ball at its own 35.

7:27 p.m. -- Harlon Barnett is challenging that the ball was picked up in bounds.

7:25 p.m. -- McMillan is back on the sideline for Washington. On the kickoff, Michigan State steps out of bounds at its own 1-yard line trying to get an illegal kick called.

Washington Field Goal: Washington 38, Michigan State 0

7:20 p.m. -- Michigan State manages to hold Washington out of the end zone, and the Huskies settle for a field goal.

7:19 p.m. -- Dillon Johnson rips off a big run for Washington, and they're knocking on the door again. The playcalling has not at all let up.

7:17 p.m. -- Something nifty Washington likes to do is roll out to the right and then fire it cross-field. Not a common approach, but when your quarterback is as good as Penix you can get away with some shenanigans.

7:15 p.m. -- We're back underway, as MSU kicks off to Washington to start the second half.

Halftime: Washington 35, Michigan State 0

Abject disaster for Michigan State in the first half. Nothing worked. Michael Penix Jr. goes 20 for 25 with 375 yards and four touchdowns. Odunze and Polk have 113 yards each and McMillan has 96, though he's dealing with an injury sustained near the half. Noah Kim is constantly under pressure and everything is high. Very simply, nothing has gone Michigan State's way.

Touchdown Washington: Washington 35, Michigan State 0

6:50 p.m. -- Penix hits Odunze on the sideline again, and he's run out of bounds with 12 seconds left. Remember, Washington originally lined up to take a knee. Next play, Penix hits Westover for his third touchdown catch of the game. Bad has only gotten worse in East Lansing.

6:48 p.m. -- McMillan limps off the field, and Washington resumes from the MSU 30.

6:46 p.m. -- Washington seems happy to salt the wound. The Huskies came out in the victory formation, but McMillan ran it out of the formation. Next play, Penix hits McMillan down the sideline for a big play but McMillan is hurt.

6:45 p.m. -- Michigan State went for it on fourth-and-9 and Kim's throw was incomplete, but Washington jumped offsides. It'll be fourth-and-4 from the 34-yard line, and MSU does it again. This time, Kim flicks it incomplete again. Washington gets it back with 41 seconds.

6:42 p.m. -- Montorie Foster Jr. makes a few big plays in a row to get Michigan State back into Washington territory. After the defense got a stop, the offense is hoping to get on the board. A minute left in the half.

6:38 p.m. -- Penix and the Huskies gunned for the first down on third-and-20, but Odunze can't make the catch in double coverage. Washington punts from the MSU 37, and and Michigan State will take it from its own nine.

6:35 p.m. -- Now it's Odunze making a big catch down to the Michigan State 27-yard line. Washington then completes a screen and has a touchdown erased by a hold on the outside from Jalen McMillan.

6:32 p.m. -- There are really no more words. Polk makes another incredible leaping grab. Washington then loses 15 yards for taunting after the catch.

6:29 p.m. -- They don't do anything with it, however, as Kim was under pressure and missed a few receivers. MSU punts down to the Washington 5-yard line, a fair catch is called for, and Michigan State tackles the returner having missed it. So instead of starting inside the five, Washington will start near the 20.

6:26 p.m. -- Finally a break for Michigan State. It converts a third-and-4 to Maliq Carr, who is then hit late by Ralen Goforth. State looking to get on the board here, and it's nearing midfield.

6:24 p.m. -- MSU can't get out of its own way, as another hold will have it starting at its own 12.

Touchdown Washington: Washington 28, Michigan State 0

6:20 p.m. -- Yet another Washington touchdown, this time to Westover on the sideline. Spartans look completely overmatched.

6:15 p.m. -- The boobirds come out as a first down on third-and-4 was erased by unsportsmanlike conduct, and Michigan State ran the ball on third-and-17, leading to another punt.

Touchdown Washington: Washington 21, Michigan State 0

6:07 p.m. -- Well, that about sums it up. Jordan Hall got a hand on the ball and Polk caught the duck, scoring from 30 yards out. Sometimes luck just isn't on your side, and Washington continues to dominate.

6:06 p.m. -- On the very next play Penix stands in and takes a hard hit, but he finds Polk over the middle. Now at the Michigan State 30.

6:05 p.m. -- This offense is so potent. Penix uncorks another deep ball to Odunze for a huge gain, and the long field just got a whole lot shorter. Incredible throw and great catch. The Spartan secondary has no answers.

6 p.m. -- Can't decide if that's cool play design from MSU or if it's a disaster waiting to happen. Kim ran a Tebow-esque jump pass from the Washington 34-yard line and airmailed Carter. Gets sacked on the next play for a loss of seven. Once MSU's offense falls behind the chains, its life has gotten very difficult. Spartans will punt from the Washington 41 and it lands at the four.

5:58 p.m. -- Good run there from Nathan Carter. Extremely important for the Spartans to not forget about him.

End of first quarter: Washington 14, Michigan State 0

5:52 p.m. -- Michigan State starts this drive strong on a swing pass out to Tyrell Henry. The first quarter now ends and it is 14-0 Washington, but MSU has the ball.

Touchdown Washington: Washington 14, Michigan State 0

5:48 p.m. -- Washington scores with ease as Jack Westover powers it in. The Huskies made it look easy.

5:47 p.m. -- Next play, Penix finds a massive hole in the secondary to hit Ja'Lynn Polk. Washington has the ball from the six. Bernard gets another carry but this time is brought down at the 5-yard line.

5:45 p.m. -- Kim throws an interception you could see coming as the play developed. Mishael Powell jumps the slant route intended for Tre Mosly and it's Washington ball.

5:43 p.m. -- This wasn't a quick change situation, but Michigan State treated it like one. Kim takes a shot downfield and Washington gets flagged for pass interference.

5:40 p.m. -- Michigan State's defense makes a big play! Penix airmailed it off McMillan's hands and the ball was tipped and nearly intercepted. The Huskies took a delay of game on fourth down and now punt it away. MSU will start from its own 26-yard line.

5:35 p.m. -- One of the things Penix does so well is knowing when to take what's given. MSU is playing deep zone coverage here so far, and Washington is finding the soft spots in the zone. Penalties, however, are hurting the Huskies. A hold and a false start on this series has them in third-and-10.

5:32 p.m. -- Obviously this Huskie offense was going to be able to throw the ball today, but the running game is a bigger concern. MSU is struggling to tackle, exacerbating its problems.

5:28 p.m. -- A great special teams play keeps Washington inside the 20-yard line to start this drive. It's on the MSU defense now.

5:27 p.m. -- That play was wiped out by a false start, and MSU completes another five-yard pass to make it fourth-and-3. On a day where MSU needs to be almost perfect, the early mistakes are stacking up.

5:24 p.m. -- Tre Mosely made an unbelievable catch, though it went for just five yards. The play is being reviewed since the nose of the ball did graze the grass.

Touchdown Washington: Washington 7, Michigan State 0

5:19 p.m. -- DeBoer gives Germie Bernard the call, and the Spartan transfer takes it in for six. Washington has jumped out to the lead, and Michigan State has some stuff to figure out early.

5:16 p.m. -- Disastrous start for the MSU defense. Penix finds Jalen McMillan completely alone for a big gain, and Dillon Johnson then runs it inside the 10-yard line. Washington is making it looks easy. Johnson takes it again inside the 2-yard line.

5:15 p.m. -- MSU punts it away for 31 yards and Penix and the Huskies get the ball near midfield.

5:11 p.m. -- Michigan State was moving the ball somewhat well to start, but Kim takes a hard hit from Zion Tupuola-Fetui for an eight-yard loss. The broadcast believes Kim fumbled, but MSU takes it second-and-18. Strange circumstances. Kim then airmails one to Nathan Carter and it's third-and-18.

5:08 p.m. -- We're underway in East Lansing, and Noah Kim and the Spartans will start with the ball.

5:03 p.m. -- Washington's secondary is going to be missing some key faces.

4:52 p.m. -- Really cool artwork from the MSU social team.

4:50 p.m. -- Kalen DeBoer on Penix: "He keeps getting better year by year and obviously game by game."

4:30 p.m. -- Welcome to Michigan State vs. Washington! The Spartans host the No. 8 Huskies, as Michael Penix Jr. looks to replicate an incredible 2022 performance in Seattle. As a reminder, this game is streaming-only on Peacock.
