Game notes: The Spartans and Bulldogs meet as part of the Gavitt Games, which pit Big Ten teams against Big East teams. The Spartans clobbered Western Michigan, 90-46, last time out behind 17 points from Gabe Brown. Six MSU players scored eight or more points, and Joey Hauser had a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double. It was a step in the right direction following a season-opening loss, 87-74, to the then-No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks.

Butler has taken down IUPUI, Central Arkansas and Troy to begin the season so MSU figures to be the Bulldogs' toughest test yet. Butler was picked for a sixth-place finish in the Big East preseason coaches poll. Chuck Harris, who scored 23 in the win Saturday over Troy, was on the all-conference freshman team last season and led the Bulldogs at 12.9 points per game. Four other players who averaged 10 points a game or more last year return as well. Next up, Butler plays No. 14 Houston in a road game Nov. 22.
