Michigan hockey is Frozen Four-bound

When you have a collection of talent like Michigan hockey does, with four first-round NHL draft picks — four of whom were in the top five — there are high expectations. And the Wolverines are now meeting those high expectations.

But there’s still more to go. Two games, in fact.

As a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament, the hockey team got past 4-seed American International and then 2-seed Quinnipiac on Sunday, winning its side of the bracket. That means that the maize and blue are heading to the Frozen Four, where they’ll take on fellow 1-seed Denver, for a chance to advance to the national championship game.

But it wasn’t an easy route getting to the Frozen Four.

Though the Wolverines had a 4-0 lead, Quinnipiac scored three goals and pulled its goalie with four minutes left. However, the maize and blue scored the deciding goal on the empty net before adding another. Both teams scored once again before the game was officially decided.

The Wolverines and Pioneers will have some time to ponder their impending matchup, as the Frozen Four doesn’t commence until April 7, at 5:00 p.m. EDT. The winner will face either Minnesota or Minnesota State in the championship game. The Frozen Four will take place at TD Garden in Boston.
