MEET THE ROSTER: Michigan basketball 2023-24 roster: Bold predictions, everything you need to know

Game notes: The Wolverines will still be wearing maize and blue, but nearly everything else will be different in this exhibition opener. Start with the players: Co-captain Hunter Dickinson is now a Kansas Jayhawk, thanks to the transfer portal (and an NIL payday), and Jett Howard and Kobe Bufkin are in the NBA after being selected in this summer’s draft. In comes Tennessee transfer forward Olivier Nkamhoua, who averaged 10.8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists in 25.3 minutes a game for the Vols’ Sweet 16 squad last season and Nimari Burnett, a McDonald’s All-American in high school who played at Alabama and Texas Tech. Then there’s the coach: Juwan Howard underwent heart surgery during the offseason and there’s ‘no timetable’ for his return; running the show is assistant Phil Martelli, with fellow assistants Saddi Washington and Howard Eisley splitting offense and defense duties.

The Wolverines’ lone exhibition foe might not be the best measure for the Wolverines: The Division II Timberwolves went 2-26 last season and dropped an exhibition match to Central Michigan, 81-55, on Oct. 22. They were paced by a pair of Okemos standouts: Noah Pruitt led the Timberwolves with 11 points and added four rebounds and two assists against the Chips, while Will Young II, ahem, chipped 10 points, five rebounds and a block.

After this one, the competition escalates quickly, with UNC Asheville set to visit the Crisler Center for U-M’s season opener at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (Big Ten Network). The Bulldogs did something last season Michigan couldn’t: Make the NCAA tournament, as Asheville went 27-8 and 16-2 in Big South play to grab a 15-seed (and lose to UCLA in the tourney). Northwood, meanwhile, will open its regular season by hosting Ferris State at 5 p.m. Nov. 10.
