Miami Hurricanes football getting rid of popular Turnover Chain, new coach Mario Cristobal says

The Miami Hurricanes are doing away with the Turnover Chain.

New Miami coach Mario Cristobal confirmed the popular piece of jewelry's demise to the Action Network's Brett McMurphy. "It's not part of our culture," Cristobal said of his reasoning for retiring the chain.

Cristobal, 51, is scheduled to speak Thursday at ACC Media Days, and he will almost certainly be asked more about the decision.

The chain debuted in 2017, under then-head coach Mark Richt. The tradition of handing out the Turnover Chain on the sideline to players for takeaways continued throughout Manny Diaz's tenure. Along the way, the chain got gaudier and gaudier. It also helped inspire similarly over-the-top celebrations throughout college football.

In his first year at his alma mater after four successful seasons at Oregon, though, Cristobal is charting a new course.
