Mets, Yankees 2024 MLB Draft lottery odds set

The Mets and Yankees have their eyes set on the 2024 season and it begins with the upcoming MLB Draft.

Wednesday, MLB announced the official lottery odds for the upcoming draft including how likely both the teams from Queens and the Bronx will have a top pick. Since last season, with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the top six picks will be determined by a lottery consisting of teams who did not make the playoffs.

The Mets had the eighth-worst record while the Yankees had the 16th-worst record out of 18 non-playoff teams. Here’s the full breakdown of the lottery odds for the 2024 MLB Draft starting with the team with the worst winning percentage, in parenthesis, via MLB.com:

1. Athletics (.309), 18.3%

2. Royals (.346), 18.3%

3. Rockies (.364), 18.3%

4. White Sox (.377), 14.7%

5. Nationals (.438), 0.0%

6. Cardinals (.438), 8.3%

7. Angels (.451), 6.1%

8. Mets (.463), 4.3%

9. Pirates (.469) 3.0%

10. Guardians (.469), 2.0%

11. Tigers (.481), 1.6%

12. Red Sox (.481), 1.2%

13. Giants (.488), 1.0%

14. Reds (.506), 0.9%

15. Padres (.506), 0.7%

16. Yankees (.506), 0.6%

17. Cubs (.512), 0.4%

18. Mariners (.543), 0.2%

You may have noticed the Washington Nationals, who had the fifth-worst record in 2023, have a zero percent chance of getting a lottery pick. That’s because the Nationals are a “payor club” -- a club that gives, rather than receives, revenue sharing dollars -- and are not allowed to be selected in consecutive lotteries. Washington had the No. 2 pick in 2023 so they are not allowed to have a lottery pick in the 2024 draft.

This means the Mets have the seventh-best odds in the lottery. Overall, the chances the Mets have a top-six pick are above 40 percent. It’s important to note that if the Mets, Padres and Yankees don’t secure a top-six pick their picks will fall 10 spots because they exceeded the tax threshold with their 2023 payrolls.

So If the Mets pick seventh, they will actually pick 17th.

The lottery will take place at this year’s Winter Meetings on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
