Who is starting for the Mets?

Justin Verlander gets the ball for the Mets, the 14th start of his first season with the club.

The 40-year-old is looking to bounce back from one of his more disappointing outings on the season in which he walked six batters over five innings while allowing three runs on two hits in a 6-0 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

But he has been better of late, pitching to a 2.50 ERA (10 runs over 36.0 innings) in his last six starts dating back to June 14.

On the season, the right-hander has surrendered 34 runs (31 earned) on 67 hits over 75.0 innings pitched for a 3.72 ERA (4.04 FIP) and a 1.227 WHIP. He has 63 strikeouts in that span for 7.6 Ks per nine innings, down 1.9 from last year. Verlander's 25 walks nearly equal his total of 29 in 175.0 innings a season ago. (His walks per nine has doubled to 3.0.)

Verlander's 22 career wins (in 47 starts) over the White Sox are tied for fourth-most in baseball history, behind Jim Kaat, Frank Tanana and Jim Palmer. The veteran is tied with Nolan Ryan's 22 wins, per Elias.

Who is starting for the White Sox?

On the other side of things, the Mets will have to deal with right-hander Touki Toussaint.

Toussaint began the season with Cleveland before he was claimed off waivers by Chicago on June 20 and will be making his third start (sixth appearance) for the South Siders. He last pitched on June 14 against Atlanta, allowing one run on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts over 5.1 innings.

On the hole, Toussaint has allowed nine runs on 15 hits over 24.0 innings for a 3.38 ERA (4.51 FIP) with a 1.375 WHIP in 2023 over three starts and three appearances out of the bullpen. He has walked 18 batters with 22 strikeouts.

The 27-year-old is a familiar face as he was with the Braves for four seasons from 2018-21 and faced the Mets on five occasions. Jeff McNeil has three hits in eight at-bats with a walk against Toussaint.

Upcoming schedule

The Mets and White Sox conclude their three-game set on Thursday afternoon with the matinee starting at 1:10 p.m. on SNY.

Left-hander Jose Quintana makes his season debut after a long stint on the injured list. He will face off against Chicago right-hander Michael Kopech (3-8, 4.47 ERA).
