Mets prospect acquired in Eduardo Escobar trade undergoes Tommy John surgery: report

Apr 18, 2023; Los Angeles, California, USA; New York Mets third baseman Eduardo Escobar (10) strikes out in the fifth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

The deal that sent Eduardo Escobar to the Los Angeles Angels was one of many moves made by the Mets this season, and it looks like one of the prospects in that trade won’t be playing for some time.

When MLB Pipeline updated their in-season Top 100 prospects list, they revealed that right-hander Coleman Crow underwent Tommy John surgery this summer. The date of the surgery wasn't specified, but according to MLB Pipeline the prospect will be out until 2024.

Crow and RHP Landon Marceaux were the prospects the Mets received in return for Escobar back on June 24. When the Mets acquired Crow, he was already on the IL dating back to late April with elbow inflammation. According to The Athletic, the Mets were comfortable with Crow’s medical reports.

Before he was placed on the IL, the 22-year-old was having a promising season. In four starts in Double-A, Crow went 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP. He also struck out 31 batters in 24 innings pitched. His last start, on April 26, saw the righty give up two runs in seven innings white striking out six batters.

Last season, Crow appeared in 24 games (23 starts) in Double-A where he pitched to a 9-3 record and a 4.85 ERA. He also struck out 128 batters in 128 innings.

In their updated rankings, MLB Pipeline put Crow as the Mets’ 29th best prospect with an estimated time of arrival to the big leagues being 2025.
