Mets pitching prospect Calvin Ziegler hasn’t pitched in 2023 as he recovers from offseason surgery, but the young right-hander has suffered another injury that now guarantees he won’t suit up this season.

According to Mike Mayer of Metsmerized Online, Ziegler tore his right quad and is expect to be out for the season. This happened while Ziegler was recovering from March surgery to have bone spurs removed from his right elbow.

A second-round pick of the Mets in 2021, Ziegler had a promising 2022 season with Low-A St. Lucie, despite what some of his numbers say, pitching to a 4.44 ERA with 70 strikeouts in just 46.2 innings. Over his 16 starts, Ziegler held opponents to a .166 batting average, but he walked too many hitters, allowing 35 free passes in those 46.2 innings.

The 20-year-old Ziegler is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Mets’ No. 7 overall prospect and their third best pitching prospect, behind Blade Tidwell and Dominic Hamel, but ahead of Mike Vasil. SNY last ranked Ziegler as the No. 11 Mets prospect.
