Mets @ Braves, Aug. 21: David Peterson opens series in Atlanta at 7:20 p.m. on SNY

Aug 4, 2023; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; New York Mets starting pitcher David Peterson (23) throws a second inning pitch against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

The Mets (58-67) continue their road trip as they open a three-game set with the Atlanta Braves at 7:20 p.m. on SNY.

Mets Notes

  • After starting the month with a six-game losing streak, the Mets have won three of their four series

  • The Braves dominated the Mets just last week, taking three-out-of-four from them at Citi Field

  • Francisco Lindor is on a seven-game hitting streak and he's batting .400 with seven runs, five RBI, and a .919 OPS over that span

  • Jeff McNeil has safely hit in 13 of his last 15 games and he's posted a .328 average, two homers and nine RBI over the span

  • Pete Alonso went deep twice over the weekend, now giving him 13 homers and 32 RBI over his last 30 games

Who is starting for the Mets?

David Peterson (3-7, 5.45 ERA) takes the mound for the Mets in the series opener.

The left-hander has pitched well for the most part since returning to the big-league rotation, though he isn't working very deep into games. He's thrown just 10.1 innings across three starts.

Peterson has a 2.61 ERA over that span, but his 1.84 WHIP suggests he's been getting a bit lucky. His last time out he issued a season-high six walks across just 3.2 innings against the Pirates.

When Peterson faced the Braves earlier this year, he allowed four runs on five hits (one homer) while striking out six in a 4-0 loss.

Who is starting for the Braves?

Atlanta will start Allan Winans, who earned his first career win just last week against the Mets.

In just his second MLB appearance, the 28-year-old right-hander allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out nine across seven shutout innings at Citi Field.

Winans, a former Mets draft pick, has a 2.79 ERA and 1.03 WHIP across 20 minor league appearances this season. He now slots into the Braves' rotation in place of the injured Yonny Chirinos.

Upcoming schedule

The Mets and Braves will continue their three-game set at Truist Park on Tuesday at 7:20 p.m.

Tylor Megill (7-6, 5.53 ERA) will take the ball for New York against Atlanta's RHP Bryce Elder (9-4, 3.46 ERA) on SNY.
