Metro Roundup: Rose stays unbeaten in HCAC

Oct. 23—Senior Miguel Robertson lit up the Franklin secondary for 356 yards, two touchdowns on 25 for 33 passing in a 50-35 shootout win for Rose-Hulman

Saturday, against the Grizzlies, Engineers senior wideouts Jailen Hobbs and Daniel Huery mounted triple-digit receiving yards, each, and combined for 214 yards and 16 catches.

Rose (5-2, 4-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) had a balanced attack with senior running back Grant Ripperda gaining 188 yards on the ground with a 32-carry workload and two scores.

Sophomore back Jay Smith contributed two scores and had 51 yards on 10 attempts.

The Engineers defense was led by senior defensive lineman Jakey Ovanic with a team-best nine tackles and he had two stops for a loss and a 1/2 sack.

Senior linebacker Riley Lopian had a 1/2 sack and was one of seven Engineers with stops in the backfield.

Fifth-year defensive lineman Payton Gryniewicz led Rose with three tackles for a loss.

Franklin (3-4, 3-1) led 28-27 with 4:59 left in the first half before Rose rattled off 23 successive points, including 10 to close the first half, to command the game.

Senior wideout Brandon Green, who had two touchdown receptions, caught a 71-yard pass in the closing half for the biggest pickup of the day.

Next — Rose will host Hanover Saturday.

* SMWC tops Quincy — At West Vigo, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (4-1) defeated Quincy (3-2) 28-14 in sprint football Saturday.

Freshman running back Peyton Emberton and Riverton Parke alumnus Derron Hazzard, a freshman, (34-yard score), secured rushing touchdowns in the opening quarter.

Hazzard tacked on another score to go up two touchdowns again before SMWC held on at Jay Barrett Field.

The final score of the game came via a 13-yard pass from junior quarterback Jeremiah Tosky to sophomore wideout Corbyn Cleveland.

Next — The Pomeroys play at Walsh University Saturday.

—Indiana State 1, Murray State 1 — Carlie Jensen scored in the 89th minute to give Indiana State a 1-1 draw against visiting Murray State on Sunday afternoon as the host Sycamores closed out the season.

With the tie, Indiana State (2-6-10, 1-4-5) saw their season come to an end. The Sycamores were unable to move past Evansville in the final Missouri Valley standings to secure a place in next week's MVC Championships.

Murray State (5-8-5, 3-2-5) took the 1-0 lead in the 65th minute as Mary Hardy received the pass in the box from Audrey Henry and Ava Roberson.

The Sycamores never stopped battling and it was fitting that the seniors put together the match-tying goal in the 89th minute. Alexa Mackey and Audrey Stephens set up Jensen inside the box and the senior put the tying goal at the 88:39 mark to knot the score up at 1-1.

Indiana State continued to press late with Katie Yankey battling for the ball near midfield in the closing seconds, but ISU was unable to get the ball into the offensive third for a game-winning attempt late in settling for the tie.

College Volleyball

* Illinois State 3, Indiana State 0 — At Normal, Ill., freshman Kira Holland recorded double-digit kills in her 10th straight match as the Sycamores (3-18, 1-10 Missouri Valley Conference) fell in their weekend road finale.

ISU fell 25-23, 25-15, 25-5 Saturday at CEFCU Arena. Eight of Holland's 14 kills came in the first set. She added 10 digs in the match for her fifth double-double of the campaign.

Junior outside hitter Madisen Perry recorded six kills, her most since Sept. 29 against Missouri State, and season-best five digs.

She was one of seven Sycamores to record five digs in the match, along with Freshman setter Avery Hales' seven digs, and she notched 22 assists.

Next — Indiana State begins a two-match homestand Friday against Southern Illinois.

* Holland racks up fourth straight MVC honor — Outside hitter Kira Holland has been a mainstay of late for the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week, announced by the league on Monday.

The Medina, Ohio native has amassed at least 10 kills in 10 straight outings.

She averaged 4.67 kills, 3.17 digs per set against Bradley and Illinois State.

In MVC action, she ranks sixth with 3.76 kills per set and ranks second among frosh in digs. Her 3.43 kills per set on the year rank 13th in Division I among freshmen.

She is the first Sycamore in school history to earn four weekly accolades in one year.

—Woods 3, West Virginia Tech 2 — At Beckley, W.Va., Ina Grbic had three of her six kills in the fifth set and Raymiah Allen had three kills in the fifth to help spark Saint Mary-of-the-Woods to a 21-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18, 15-10 victory at West Virginia University Tech.

The .500 attack percentage in the fifth set was the second straight match the Pomeroys put together an outstanding fifth set, a testament to the team's strong depth.

The Pomeroys (26-3, 12-2 RSC) matched last season's school record for wins and picked up a key win against a team that was ahead of it in the overall River States Conference standings going into the weekend.

Freshman Karla Melendez led the attack with 14 kills, setting a career-high.
