METRO ROUNDUP: Rose offense explodes for 78-54 victory

Nov. 4—Senior Grant Ripperda ran for five touchdowns and 226 yards in Rose-Hulman's wild 78-54 triumph over host Defiance in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football Saturday afternoon.

That sets up the Engineers (7-2 overall, 6-0 HCAC) for a conference championship showdown against Mount St. Joseph (8-1, 6-0) at 1:30 p.m. next Saturday at Cook Stadium. That's the same season-ending scenario that occurred the previous two seasons, with Rose emerging with the HCAC title at home in 2021 and the Lions returning the favor in Cincinnati in 2022.

On Saturday, Jay Smith added two TDs and 113 yards to the Rose-Hulman ground attack, while Miguel Robertson completed 17 of 25 passes for three scores and 192 yards. Two of those aerial TDs went to Daniel Huery and the other went to Ben Klein.

Interestingly, Rose's most explosive player this season — senior wide receiver Jailen Hobbs — was held to three catches for 26 yards and zero TDs, although Hobbs did score on a 79-yard punt return in the first quarter.

College volleyball

—Drake 3, Indiana State 0 — At Des Moines, Iowa, Indiana State closed the road portion of its schedule Saturday evening, as the Sycamores were defeated by Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake in three sets (25-14, 25-18, 25-10) inside the Knapp Center.

Karinna Gall led the attack for the Sycamores with nine kills and seven digs, while Kira Holland added eight kills and eight digs. Holland's eight digs were a team high, with five different Sycamores recording five or more in the match.

Indiana State scored the first point of the match courtesy of a kill from Storm Suhre and kills from Gall and Ella Scott kept the Sycamores on pace with the host Bulldogs. Consecutive kills from Holland, along with a service ace from Avery Hales, got the Sycamores within two at 12-10. Then Holland kept the pressure on with another kill. Drake went on a five-point scoring run to break open the set out of the media timeout, though, and claimed the opening frame 25-14 despite a late kill from Gall.

Drake scored seven of the first eight points to begin the second set before kills from Holland and Hales got things going for the Blue and White. Gall tacked on a kill midway through and Macy Lengacher followed with a service ace to pull the Sycamores within 13-11. Another kill from Gall and another Sycamore service ace started a four-point run for ISU, which managed to cut its deficit to 16-15. Drake went on a run of its own, though, and scored nine of the last 12 points to take the second set 25-18.

The Sycamores scored the first two points of the third set on a Gall kill and a service ace from Scott, but Drake countered with an 8-1 scoring run to take control of the set. Consecutive kills from Hales got the Sycamores within four at 10-6, but a 10-point run for the Bulldogs midway through the set proved to be the difference. Indiana State never got in a rhythm in the back half of the set as Drake clinched the match by taking the third 25-10.

ISU (3-22 overall, 1-14 MVC) will close its season with three straight home matches, starting at 6 p.m. Friday against Murray State in the ISU Arena.
